Job Description


Top medical executive for all contracts in assigned area of responsibility with primary accountability for quality and cost of medical care provided to patients throughout assigned region.  Reports to Group Vice President & Chief Medical Officer (CMO).  Partners and has joint accountability with Regional Chief Operations Officer (COO) for all operations programs, including P&L, talent management and business development.  In accordance with the company’s strategic plan, develops and executes clinical strategies to promote quality, safety and cost effectiveness.  Responsible for determining clinical medical policies and ensuring compliance with governmental (state and federal) and accrediting body directives, rules, regulations, and clinical performance.

  1. Ensure that the organizational strategy and plans are established with full recognition of all clinical requirements and expectations.  These strategies include continuous quality improvement, clinical outcomes that are focused, measure and cost effective, charting a course and developing long term solutions to address growing provider shortages and the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
  2. Set and maintain clinical standards in the region by driving decisions that are patient-centered, collaborative, evidence based, and focused on both quality and utilization.
  3. Provide clinical leadership for care management, monitor results through data review, and educate team to decrease negative variances and promote sharing of best practices.
  4. Oversee quality of care delivered by offsite and onsite specialists within the region.
  5. Interpret trends and take action at the regional level for improving the health status of the population, partnering with the client to implement appropriate interventions.
  6. Develop and lead a team of physicians in UM decision making, compliance with clinical quality and UM programs specific to contract requirements, and adherence to corporate UM and clinical quality policies and procedures.
  7. Improve regional results by analyzing utilization data and cost trends, developing strategies, and establishing enhanced exceptions for Site Medical Directors and other team members.
  8. Take action on Doctor sick call grievance trends and implement region wide process improvement.
  9. Identify opportunities and work with regional team to design and implement changes to improve efficiency in clinical operations and workflow.
  10. Mentor, monitor, and utilize regional staff in the appropriate use of medications (formulary and non-formulary) and in medication administration (e.g., side effect profile, adherence, drug/drug interactions).
  11. Build and maintain productive relationship with client leaders (including client CMO when applicable) through regular communication, face-to-face meetings, and reporting processes. 
  12. Proactively inform client of risks and high profile patient management cases and how both are being managed.
  13. Partner with COO to regularly update the client as to results, improvements needed, and how Corizon is meeting/exceeding client expectations.
  14. Collaborate with regional and site management to identify, interview, select, and retain Site Medical Directors and Staff Physicians.  Know and ensure compliance with credentialing requirements for all providers and independant contractors across area of responsibility.
  15. Confirm new provider onboarding processes are completed timely, accurately, and effectively for all new providers.
  16. Onboard, supervise, and mentor Site Medical Directors and other physician leaders in UM and QI tools, techniques, and processes within the corrections environment.
  17. Role model and develop strong leadership and management skills in Site Medical Directors and other physician leaders
  18. Conduct thorough and timely Peer Reviews for Medical Directors and non-physician practitioners, according to Corizon policy and procedures.
  19. Identify candidates with leadership potential from among site physicians/medical directors.  Create development plans and mentor these high potentials
  20. Represent the company and correctional medicine at medical and osteopathic residency programs, conferences, and other venues in order to create awareness about correctional medicine and Corizon.
  21. Create a team environment and maximize team effectiveness by collaborating with physician staff, non-physician practitioners, and nursing personnel.







Job Requirements

  • MD or DO Degree required.
  • Completion of residency and board certification in primary care specialty (Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or Obstetrics and Gynecology) preferred.  
  • License to practice medicine in state(s) within area of responsibility required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years clinical experience required.  Preferred experience includes:
    • Managed care experience or management experience with a large physician group
    • Three (3) years correctional medicine experience
    • Formal management/leadership training
    • Formal training in CQI or similar (Lean, Six Sigma, etc).
    • Demonstrated ability to meet financial targets by implementing appropriate clinical quality improvement initiatives.
  • Strong verbal, written, and communication skills.  
  • Effective presentation skills in one-on-one and group situations to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to analyze situations and/or data to solve extremely complex and often abstract problems.
