Lead Structural and Mechanical 3D Designer
Job Description

Job Summary:

The Lead Structural and Mechanical Designer is responsible for working with the Project Engineer to develop the structural and mechanical design for industrial plants mainly in material handling. The Lead Structural and Mechanical Designer is expected to be able to take general direction from the engineer and implement the vast majority of the drawing deliverables. The Lead Structural and Mechanical Designer is responsible for maintaining the project structural and mechanical CAD standards and assuring that the proper design standards are followed on the drawings. They are also responsible to make sure the basic engineering drawings are maintained throughout the project as well as maintain the overall model. The Lead Designer and Project Engineer need to work together to assure a cohesive set of quality deliverables are produced that are correct and consistent.  The designer will have worked in bulk material handling within coal, grain, cement or other bulk material terminals, mines or plants.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner so that you get along with clients, co-workers and management
  • Work with Discipline Leads to establish budget and hours for tasks and deliverables and make sure they are distributed
  • Coordinate work of other Lead Designers assigned to the task
  • Complete work within the allotted time for the task/drawing
  • Understand the level of detail required on the drawing
  • Work with Project Engineer to develop project CAD standards
  • Develop, gather updates, and maintain BIM for the project
  • Work with Designers to maintain standards and consistency across all project teams and offices working on the project
  • Alert Project Engineer, Discipline Lead’s and Designers of changes and or modifications to the Basic Engineering Drawings
  • Make sure Discipline Leads and Designers know and have the correct project standards and checklists
  • Know the project plan, schedule, and standards
  • Responsible for checking to make sure the project standards are being followed by all design teams and offices
  • Responsible for working with Project Engineer to implement cross-discipline review and QA/QC procedures
  • Work with Project Engineer to establish how drawings are submitted and revised
  • Understand the changes to the BIM and basic engineering drawings and why they are necessary
  • Attend internal project meetings and project meetings with the client as requested by the PE/PM
  • Responsible for assuring all correct QA/QC standards are being followed

    Job Qualifications:

    • Strong understanding of engineering design work process
    • Strong understanding of structural and mechanical design for industrial systems
    • Demonstrated experience developing equipment and overall facility layouts
    • Demonstrated experience preparing structural and mechanical layouts for material handling equipment
    • Demonstrated experience in the preparation of an overall 3D structural and mechanical model
    • Demonstrated experience laying out bulk material conveyors up to 84” wide
    • Demonstrated experience with the design of air gravity conveyor, dust collection, pneumatic transfer and bulk transport loading and unloading
    • Demonstrated experience with the design of drag conveyors, bucket elevators, samplers, and screw conveyors
    • Demonstrated experience preparing mechanical bill of material drawings
    • Demonstrated experience preparing general arrangements and developing the general mechanical and structural details
    • Demonstrated experience selecting and specifying equipment
    • Demonstrated experience laying out duct work, chutes, and spouting
    • Demonstrated experience basic structural layout
    • Demonstrated experience developing equipment lists
    • Demonstrated experience managing work points for a facility
    • Demonstrated experience managing Xref between disciplines and 3D models
    • Demonstrated experience with 3D design software such as CADWorx, Plant 3D or Autoplant
    • Experience with bulk material handling and storage facilities within distribution terminals, mines or plants
