Senior Component Laboratory Technician

 South Texas Blood & Tissue Center a subsidiary of BioBridge Global,

 is seeking an

  Senior Component Laboratory Technician

for the San Antonio location.

Job Summary:

Responsible to inspect and perform all phases related to blood components production, labeling of units, quarantining of blood products, and filtration of units.  Ensure all products are processed in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and governing regulatory agencies.  Will conduct in-service training to staff regarding policies & Standard Operating Procedures. Assist in the monitoring of the overall functions of the component department and assigned staff.

Responsibilities / Job Expectations for the Senior Component Laboratory Technician include:

  • Assist with coordination of the overall activities of component production.
  • Responsible for overseeing and performing the labeling of all blood components.
  • Provide technical direction to staff regarding workflow.
  • Process blood components to established quality standards.
  • Assist Supervisor and Assistant Director in scheduling personnel to meet processing requirements.
  • Perform South Texas Blood & Tissue Center laboratory quarantine procedures (blood & tissue)
  • Perform computer data entry of components.
  • Accurately label blood components.
  • Perform calibration, quality control, and maintenance on equipment.
  • Assist in the commercial plasma and biological component shipments.
  • Ensure that the daily inventory and requisition of supplies are properly maintained.
  • Maintain adequate level of disposable supplies through internal re-supply or initiation of request for purchase of additional supplies.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with the Component Laboratory Supervisor and report any irregularities, difficulties, and unusual results immediately.
  • Assist in staff training and retraining as required.
  • Evaluate and document competency levels through direct observation and testing.
  • Exhibit a leadership role for the staff.
  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of training guides.
  • Write standard operating procedures as assigned.
  • Ensure that standing and special component requests are completed.
  • Ensure prefiltered RBC’s, cyro poor frozen plasma, and platelets are adequate for normal blood supply.
  • Review records for completion.
  • Prepare specialized blood components as directed.
  • Perform visual inspection of products prepared.
  • Determine final disposition of questionable units and provide proper documentation.
  • Perform the duties of the Component Laboratory Supervisor as required.
  • Abide by all safety regulations and monitor staff for GMP compliance.
  • Perform assigned tasks in accordance with South Texas Blood & Tissue Center Standard Operating Procedures.
  • May perform other tasks as assigned.

Job Requirements

Requirements for the Senior Component Laboratory Technician include:

 

Education:  
Associates Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or Associates or Bachelors Degree in Applied Science preferred           

Experience: 
Blood banking and/or medical background required

Five years experience in component lab preferred

Leadership experience preferred

Certification/License:  MLT (ASCP) or equivalent preferred

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Knowledge:  Must maintain a knowledge of and perform within the guidelines of all standard operating policies and procedures.  Must have an in depth knowledge of component processing techniques.  Must be knowledgeable of labeling procedures within Component Processing.  Must be competent in all aspects of technical procedures for a U.S. licensed blood bank preparing biological products.  Must have working knowledge of all lab procedures.  Must recognize unusual results or difficulties encountered in all phases of lab work.

Skills:    Must be fully capable of operating all technical equipment.  Must input computer data with accuracy.  Must be able to train staff in component procedures.  Excellent leadership skills required.  Required to provide direction and guidance to component staff in labeling operations.  Legible writing required.    

Abilities:   Must be professional, self-motivated, communicative, organized, and have the ability to work independently.  Required to provide direction and guidance to component staff in labeling operations and perform repetitive tasks on a continuing basis.  Required to provide direction and guidance to component staff in day to day operations.  Must be able to work with interruptions and perform laboratory quarantine duties on a continuing basis.  Must be precise, detailed and have good judgement.  Must be able to keep information confidential.  Must be neat in appearance and well groomed.
