Technician is responsible for the advanced installation, operation, and maintenance of the regional network elements, ensuring network integrity and quality. These networks include, but are not limited to routers, multilayer switches, MSPP, Ethernet and Ethernet backhaul, LTE core devices, Edge routers and switches. Other responsibilities include troubleshooting; upgrading; administering these platforms and multiple vendor systems; maintaining system, element and platform applications; and providing support to a varied user community; updating daily logs with site-specific information; and composing clear, concise reports for system documentation. The Switch Technician is expected to perform his/her duties with minimum supervision, and participate in cross-functional projects as scheduled.
Troubleshoots, upgrades, and administers multiple vendor systems. Technically lead during troubleshooting events.
Installs, operates, administers, and performs advanced maintenance of the regional transport network elements.
Maintains systems, elements, and platform applications.
Composes clear and concise reports for system documentation.
Monitor and install application patches and perform platform upgrades. Review alarms and log files to identify, report, resolve problems in a timely manner to ensure stability and performance.
Read, understand, and execute methods of procedures (MOPs) and ensure technical standards are adhered to and no adverse effects will be caused in the networks.
Utilize network monitoring software tools for troubleshooting, administering, monitoring during maintenance window to ensure that all network equipment is functioning in accordance with company standards and policies, before, during, and after changes are made.
Work with multiple internal and external groups to manage and coordinate work. Engage with vendors, system administrators, and network personnel to resolve issues.
Work effectively both as an individual and as a team member to create successful solutions. Be a self-starter and have the ability to work independently. Participate in on-call rotation. This position will require occasional rotation of weekly shift for overnight work. Work in fast paced and highly visible environment
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and 2+ years in the Data Communications/Networking field OR Associates Degree with certifications such as CCENT, CCNA or JNCIE plus work experience in the Data Communications/Networking field with a focus on data networks and transport .
Intermediate training in at least 3 of the following areas: data networking and communications, wireless technologies, digital communications, operating systems and applications, telecommunications, and/or power distribution.
Demonstrated knowledge of data networking protocols including TCP/IP, OSI, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, BFD, SIP and other LAN/WAN protocols is required.
Demonstrated knowledge of data transmission facilities such as 1G and 10G native Ethernet, and SONET is required.
Additional experience with Cisco IOS XR, Juniper Junos, Alcatel-Lucent 7750, Fujitsu Flashwave 9500, Tellabs DACS platforms is considered a plus. General knowledge of optical transmission equipment administration and maintenance also considered a plus. Familiarity with Protocol Analysis, Packet Capture, Wireshark & NetScout tools. Demonstrated technical and analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot end-to-end systems.
Must be able to tolerate highly stressful situations that come from balancing multiple deadlines, escalations, follow-ups from peers, and troubleshooting major issues.
Good interpersonal and communications skills
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook is required.
