Description
The Assistant Dean for Information Systems has primary responsibility for strategic planning, development, and implementation of all of the information systems for the IU School of Nursing. These responsibilities include long-range strategic planning, review of both new and existing technologies for possible implementation, the wise use of technology to support business operations, research initiatives, and curriculum research initiatives, and curriculum development and delivery methods (both traditional and distributed), the infrastructure necessary to implement them, the coordination of IUSON information technology initiatives with the university as a whole, the development of the information technology (IT) operational budget, management of IT support staff, and coordination with internal and external vendors. The Assistant Dean also serves as the Security Officer for the IUSON Core campuses (Indianapolis, Bloomington, and Columbus), ensuring that operations for allthree campuses and related programs comply with university and school information technology security and privacy policies. The Assistant Dean is accountable to the Dean of the School and serves as a member of the Dean’s Council, and participates in staff/faculty committees as elected or appointed.
The Assistant Dean for IS collaborates with the Assistant Dean for Resource Management in establishing and managing information management systems, particularly for IUPUI.
The Assistant Dean maintains a collaborative relationship with department chairpersons and Core campus deans/directors.The Assistant Dean serves as liaison with various University offices dealing with information technology, and assumes responsibility for representing the School around these matters.Collaborates with others who identify and seek grants to support teaching and learning resources.
Collaborates with other University, campus, and school technology offices/organizations to enhance information systems and learning resources for the School of Nursing.Will participate in strategic long-range planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of all of the information systems for the IUSON. This includes assessing new and existing technologies and identifying and recommending solutions for the support of curriculum development and delivery, research initiatives, the business operation, and the community partnerships of the SON.
Review existing and proposed technology initiatives and procedures within the IUSON core school (Indianapolis, Bloomington, and Columbus) to ensure compliance with IUSON and IU information technology security and privacy policies, standard operating procedures for research of the IUPUI/Clarian Institutional Review Board, as well as compliance with federal regulations (including FERPA and HIPAA). Work with technical staff to achieve compliance where necessary, and report serious problems to the dean for action.
Develop strategic technology usage plansfor the school, including life-cycle management of both the information systems and the related hardware (workstations and servers) to best position the school to achieve its mission of research and education, powered by innovation and partnerships.
Provide expert guidance and consultation to SON administration and faculty and supervise the work of IT support staff to ensure outstanding service to faculty, staff, and students.
Develop, deliver, and coordinate training materials and disseminate IT-related concepts and issues to faculty, staff, and students to promote knowledge of and interest in information technology, and to ensure the security of information systems.
Support curriculum development, implementation and delivery as well as research initiatives through the integration of related IT services (development of new systems, review and purchase of commercial software, etc.)
In alignment with the SON’s strategic plan, ensure that faculty and staff have the tools and receive support necessary to utilize technology effectively to improve the quality of and access to all of our educational offerings. Includes technical support of both the SON classrooms & a new state-of-the-art clinical simulation center with video capture and broadcast capabilities.
Oversee outside vendor involvement with IT-related issues to ensure accurate, fiscally responsible implementation.
Work with related departments (UITS, Office of the Vice President of Information Technology, Research and Sponsored Programs, technology departments of other schools, libraries, and central university administration departments) to ensure coordination of IUSON technology efforts with the university as a whole.
Develop the IT budget in collaboration with the assistant dean for resource management to ensure information technology needs are met in a timely and fiscally responsible manner.

Requirements
Master's degree from an accredited institution in computer technology, instructional design, education technology or related field. Minimum 5 years experience in computer and network administration, with at least 3 years direct supervisory experience. At least 3 years experience managing systems development, including requisite security. Experience in strategic planning. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience with planning, implementing, and overseeing of budget. Ability to manage multiple unrelated projects simultaneously, and work well under pressure of deadlines.
A broad knowledge of various technologies with expertise managing large scale and complex technology initiatives, including support for both the SON classrooms & a state-of-the-art clinical simulation with video capture and broadcast capabilities. Ability to supervise technology professionals. Expertise in troubleshooting complex technology problems. Ability to manage highly-available servers and related peripherals and software. Ability to manage information systems development and Web-based database-driven applications (including expertise in relational database servers, Web servers, and application servers). Knowledge of best practices in technology management. Knowledge of federal regulations impacting higher education's use of technology. Knowledge of best practices in information technology privacy and security, and ability to implement measures to improve security and privacy of information systems. Expertise with various multimedia technologies, including streaming media servers. Ability to interact professionally with high level managers at both the department and university level. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience with planning, implementing, and overseeing of budgets. Experience with writing proposals for extramural (grant) funding desired. Experience in strategic planning. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to manage multiple unrelated projects simultaneously, and work well under pressure of deadlines.
