Requirements

Medical Records Specialist

Required Core Skills of Medical Records Specialist:

Job requires problem-solving capabilities, a strong ability to multi-task, superior organization skills, knowledge of records filing and tracking protocols, excellent computer skills, demonstrated knowledge of professional etiquette and listening skills for both phone and in-person contact with customers, and exceptional customer service attitude.

Specific Requirements of Medical Records Specialist:

  • This is a small team environment that requires frequent shifts in priorities. Successful applicants must be comfortable with constantly shifting from one type of task to another, and with judging when to move from routine assignments to assist with higher-priority tasks or to help a co-worker when needed.
  • Phone calls and face-to-face customer interactions will require immediate responses throughout the day, and must be immediately handled without losing accuracy or speed in managing on-going records management work.  This job is routinely busy, and has a heavy workload.
  • Our Medical Records specialists are cross-trained on all duties in the department, and may from time to time be moved from one set of functions to another.  The initial job assignment is split between office and delivery/pick up functions, and involves daily driving as well as records organization, copying, filing, and telephone duties.  Both responsibilities have equal importance, and time is divided between in-office and out-of-office responsibilities.
  • A valid NM license, good driving record, and ability to pass periodic screenings for drug and alcohol use are a must.Preference will be given to applicants with defensive driving training, as well as to those with medical records and customer service experience.
  • Santa Fe Imaging's work environment is in a drug and alcohol-free, no-smoking facility with multiple work levels.  Daily activities involve the physical acts of climbing up and down stairs, walking, standing, sitting, stooping, and carrying moderately heavy records and films.
  • In addition to customer-facing service requirements, employees spend hours each day using proprietary computer programs to manage different aspects of medical records, and additional time organizing and updating paper and film records, creating digital copies of medical images and physician reports, and converting film images to digital.
  • Filing protocols and data searches are used throughout the day, requiring a good sense of both alphabetic and numeric records organization.  Multiple computer applications involve different data structures that must be learned and used to complete job activities.
  • A good knowledge of written and spoken English is required to converse with patients and read /search/locate patient files.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) a plus.
  • 40-hour work week with occasional overtime requirements.
  • Excellent attendance in all weather conditions is expected.
