Plant Manager

Job Description

The Plant Manager is responsible to plan, direct and oversee operations of the Plant Department. The Manager is also responsible for planning and maintaining work systems, procedures, and policies that enable and encourage the optimum performance of its people and for providing leadership to the plant while managing the department to meet safety goals, production deadlines, improve product quality, productivity, and budget expectations.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the overall operational, budgetary and financial responsibilities and activities of the department.
  • Work with Human Resources to recruit, interview, select, hire, and employ budgeted number of employees.
  • Ensure the safe operation of the plant.
  • Provide oversight and direction to the employees in the operation in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures.
  • Foster a spirit of teamwork and unity among the department that allows employees to work effectively together to enable each employee and the department to succeed.
  • Empower employees to take responsibility for their jobs and goals. Delegate responsibility and expect accountability and regular feedback.
  • Plan, organize, and direct the activities of the plant team to meet the organizations expectations for safety, productivity, and quality and goal accomplishment.
  • Work with purchasing to maintain min and max levels of operating supplies.
  • Maintain employee work schedules including assignments, job rotations, training, vacations and paid time off, cover for absenteeism, and overtime scheduling.
  • Communicate regularly with other Department Managers, Operation Manager and other designated contacts within the organization.
  • Model values and behaviors that contribute toward transforming the company culture.
  • Accomplish financial objectives by forecasting requirements, preparing an annual budget, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, initiating corrective actions, and monitor budget expenditures.
  • Make business decisions that are financially responsible, accountable, justifiable, and defensible in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Develop short and long term schedules for a maintenance crew by identifying resource needs, reviewing needs with appropriate management staff and allocating resources accordingly.
  • Identify and resolve issues and conflicts within the department.
  • Attend and participate in group meetings.
  • Participate in the development of goals and objectives as well as adherence to established policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science in Operations preferred with 10 to 15 years of supervisory experience;  minimum High School Diploma.  Bachelor’s degree in Science in Operations preferred.  Additional courses or study in a technically-oriented curriculum preferred. 
  • Technically competent with standard operating software, such as Microsoft Office.
  • Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential.
  • Can conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to read communication styles of team members and contractors who come from a broad spectrum of disciplines.
  • Persuasive, encouraging, and motivating.
  • Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including upper management, clients, and other departments.
  • Ability to defuse tension among the workforce, should it arise.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Customer service skills an asset.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
