Direct Support Professional–Mental Health/Social Work/Healthcare

Job Description

Thinking of a career in human services?  Do you have an interest in social services, mental health or social work?  If this is a calling, not simply a job, then we want to talk to you!  As a Direct Support Professional (DSP), you will assist individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities live a self-directed life.  You will assist with activities of daily living and are responsible for the routine operation of the home while on duty.


Job Responsibilities

 

  • Participate in the development, supervision and implementation of each individual’s Support Plan
  • Assist individuals in the development of appropriate behavioral, social, money management, housekeeping, hygiene, and other skills necessary to reach their highest level of potential
  • Accompany individuals into the community and provide support and assistance in interactions in the community while maintaining sensitivity to the rights and dignity of the individual
  • Observe and assess the needs of the individuals
  • Communicate and collaborate with other team members working with the assigned individual(s)
  • Apply positive methods to modify behavior
  • Document individual’s progress and accurately complete required paperwork/documentation

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the understanding of acceptable social, work and interpersonal behavior
  • Patience with ability to relate to individuals with disabilities
  • Housekeeping skills (cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc)
  • Basic math skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail with solid organizational skills
  • Ability to coach individuals through decision making processes
  • Ability to quickly identify symptoms associated with mental health diagnosis and ability  to apply appropriate interventions when symptoms occur
  • Ability to communicate confidently and professionally in English both verbally and in writing
  • Comfort interacting with other  team members, community members, and family members
  • Has scheduling flexibility to meet the needs of the individual and program
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and basic internet/computer skills
  • Valid driver's license and a good driving record
