The Weekly Times was founded in 1898 and later renamed The State College Times. In 1934, the paper went daily and become the Centre Daily Times. It was purchased by Knight Ridder in 1979. A Saturday A.M. edition was added in 1980 and a Sunday edition in 1982. The Centre Daily Times became a 7-day A.M. paper in 1986.

State College is located in the exact center of the state of Pennsylvania. It is 142 miles east of Pittsburgh and 192 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The Centre Daily Times is the hometown newspaper for Pennsylvania State University, one of the most well-known and well-attended universities in the country. Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions fuel much of this attention.
