Reliance House, Inc. has served Eastern Connecticut for over 36 years. What began as a single staffed, daytime drop-in center for mental health consumers residing in Norwich Hospital in the mid-1970’s, has developed into one of the most responsive and well respected providers of mental health and addiction services in the region. The mission of Reliance House is to partner with adults experiencing mental health, addiction, and developmental disabilities and to enhance the qualities of their lives. This tethered with the values of respect, recovery, self-determination, growth, choice, and unity in diversity have guided the vision and allowed the organization to become a leader in the field. Today, the organization serves over 800 individuals annually.An array of services are provided including, but not limited to:service coordination, peer support, supportive housing, employment services, supported education, adult education, social rehabilitation, shelter and homeless outreach, community outreach, respite, transitional living, young adult services,and individualized support programming.

Although we are named Reliance House, we do not actually operate out of a house. A few programs have offices in residential settings however the majority of our work is done within the community. We are an agency driven by more than 200 employees serving over 1000 adults in eastern conecticut. We are a national leader in the harm reduction model(designed to decrease harmful emotional, physical and or psycholigical behaviors to one's self or others) and the housing first model (helping individuals obtain stable housing and addressing other objectives once housing is attained).

Norwich — Two Norwich organizations were among 11 recipients of the “Spirit of the ADA” awards, as the Connecticut Developmental Disabilities Network celebrated the 16th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act in New Haven.

Award recipients included Reliance House, of Norwich, a southeastern Connecticut regional agency that provides services to people with mental illness, and Artreach, a performing arts programs to raise awareness about mental illness and to provide an artistic outlet for people with mental illness. Reliance House offers numerous programs from low-cost rental apartments for clients to case management services and outreach to homeless programs.

The agency helps staff the annual winter homeless shelter in Norwich. Artreach features the drama group Second Step Players and also runs “Work Hard, Play Hard” a recreational and artistic program for people with mental illness.
