Overview
A SHORT HISTORY - AND FUTURE - OF TRADER JOE'S

Trader Joe's
actually began in 1958 as a chain of convenience stores called "Pronto Markets” in the Los Angeles area. In 1967, the founder, Joe Coulombe, the original Trader Joe, wanted to expand the stores' offerings and enhance their image. He doubled the floor space and offered hard-to-find, boutique domestic and imported wines and gourmet food items at outstanding prices. He decked out the stores with cedar plank walls and nautical décor and garbed the Captain (the store manager), the First Mate (the assistant manager) and the Crew Members in colorful Hawaiian shirts. "Trader Joe's" was born.

Currently Trader Joe's has expanded to over 200 stores in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington.

Our future plans call for on-going development of new, one-of-a-kind food items at value prices, and continued expansion of our chain across the country.
Environment
How is shopping at Trader Joe's different from what you may be used to in a supermarket? At Trader Joe's, you won't find a lot of branded items. Instead, you'll find interesting products in Trader Joe's label. We buy products we think are winners and that will find a following among our customers. Sometimes it's a product which we intend to stock as long as it sells well; sometimes we buy a product which is in limited supply, sell through it, and you won't find it again.
Benefits
Novitiates and their dependents are eligible for Trader Joe's full time benefits. Because we know that a quality benefits program plays a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of our Crew and their families, the benefits offered by Trader Joe's are designed to be both comprehensive and competitive. Here are just a few of the benefits we offer:
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • Company Paid Retirement Plan
  • Quarterly Performance / Pay Reviews
  • Life and Accident Insurance
  • Paid Time Off
  • Food Fabulous Food! (10% Employee Discount)
  • Really Funky Shirts!
What really sets us apart from the competition is our company-paid retirement plan. Here's how it works. Trader Joe's contributes an additional 15.4% of your gross income each year to your retirement account. This account earns tax-free income until you retire... and you don't have to contribute a single cent! You won't find a better retirement plan around.
