Nashville General Hospital at Meharry

Healthcare - Health Services
Overview
Nashville General Hospital at Meharry, is the hometown hospital that has been providing health care to the Nashville/Davidson County community for
120 years. When it first opened as City Hospital on April 23, 1890, with one physician, seven nurses and 60 beds, the hospital's mission was to provide health care services to the desperately ill or those persons unable to care for themselves. Over the years, many things changed. Like the community we serve, the hospital grew in size to our current 150-bed facility. The name also went through several variations, though our nickname of "The General" remains. In 1999, we moved from the original location to the renovated George W. Hubbard Hospital on the Meharry Medical College campus. The relocation is reflected in our current name. The name also reflects our partnership with Meharry Medical College, one of only four historically black medical colleges in the U.S., as well as our unique partnership with Meharry,Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and the city. Our mission, however, retains the roots of our founders. Like them, we are committed to providing excellent health care regardless of age, race, creed, gender, sexual preference or ability to pay. Our goal is 100% access to health care and zero disparity between populations. At Nashville General, we care for YOU...for life.

Products
A siren that knifes through the night as an ambulance races to the emergency room. The cry of a newborn baby like a symphonic masterpiece to the ears of its parents. The comforting sounds of a soft voice saying, "It's OK." These are a few of the sounds of your hospital at work.

When you need quality health care services and compassionate professionals to provide it, Nashville General is the place to go. We offer a broad range of services including orthopedics, oncology, surgery, physical and occupational therapy, cardiac catheterization, ophthalmology, a mobile crisis unit, neonatal intensive care and emergency room care. In the fall of 2002, we opened our new state-of-the-art Breast Health Center that offers both preventive care and treatment in the same warm, comfortable setting.

And at Nashville General, we speak your language. To serve our community's diverse population, we're proud to have one of the top interpreting programs in the community that uses both Spanish speaking staff interpreters as well as specialists in other languages, such as Kurdish or American Sign Language for the deaf.
