Case Study: Reducing the Cost of Textbooks

The collaborative efforts of the Follett Higher Education Group and St. John?s University to save students money resulted in a 162% increase in used book sales, much to the delight of the 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students on the four New York campuses. Students saved more than $145,000 on their used book purchases.

Follett has a strong history of listening to students and their concerns to lower college textbook prices. Used textbooks are the core of every college and university bookstore operation and the desire of every student who wants to save money. Sounds simple, but it takes collaborative efforts between the institution, the faculty and the campus bookstore.

In May of 2004, Follett was selected to manage the bookstores for St. John?s University in Queens and Staten, New York. One of the partnership goals between the University and Follett was to dramatically increase the availability of used textbooks for the students.

Within the first few weeks of being on campus, the Follett bookstore management team engaged the faculty with a new and easy program to help them submit adoption information online, which made communicating course material needs more efficient. The ability to secure more used books was based on this full and open communication with the faculty, who fully responded by submitting their textbook adoptions on a timely basis. In turn, this allowed the bookstore to search more wholesalers for used books and to buy back more copies from students. A textbook buy back campaign was then launched and students responded by selling more books back to the bookstore and at remote locations on campus, which resulted in an inventory of used textbooks never before experienced by the University. Direct feedback from students showed they appreciated the increase in the availability of used books and the 25% savings they received when purchasing a used book.
