Legal Recruiting & Professional Development Manager

The Legal Recruiting and Professional Development Manager works closely with the hiring partners and Chief Legal Personnel Officer to manage the recruiting programs for all candidates including summer associate program, judicial clerk, and lateral candidates. 


Legal Recruiting

Summer Program

Manages the OCI process and planning.

Ensures that the firm’s registrations with law schools are current and complete.

Reviews and screens resumes from law schools that are not already on the firm’s OCI roster.

Leads the interview call-back process. In cooperation with the legal recruiting coordinators, organizes and confirms interview schedules and arrangements, manages reference check and writing sample review process, and reviews and approves final schedules for distribution to attorney interviewers.

Manages post-offer activities, including the coordination of offer dinners, and arranging return visits for candidates with offers.

Serves as a key point person and resource for summer associates. Responds to inquiries from attorneys and staff, and facilitates the resolution of any issues related to the Summer Associate Program. Provides regular updates to the director, and keeps the director apprised of any noteworthy matters.

Oversees the content of and posting to the summer associate intranet pages, including the picture book and events calendar.

Coordinates summer associate social events and educational programs.

Oversees the scheduling of summer associate exit interviews and ensures that evaluations are completed.

Maintains positive working relationships with law school career services representatives, as well as other recruitment contacts and resources.  

Judicial Clerks 

In coordination with the recruiting leadership determines the need for additional hiring from the judicial clerk population and establishes the appropriate recruiting program to solicit applications.

Maintains records of the firm’s relationship with the various courts and judges to ensure we have access to information regarding potential candidates.

Leads the interview call-back process. In cooperation with the legal recruiting coordinators, organizes and confirms interview schedules and arrangements, manages reference check and writing sample review process, and reviews and approves final schedules for distribution to attorney interviewers. 

Laterals 

In coordination with the practices and the recruiting leadership determines the need for additional lateral hiring

Leads the screening and interview call-back process. In cooperation with the legal recruiting coordinators, organizes and confirms interview schedules and arrangements, managers reference check and writing sample review process, and reviews and approves final schedules for distribution to attorney interviewers.

Maintains positive working relationships with legal search firms, as well as other recruitment contacts and resources. 

Professional Development 

Develop, implement, and oversee new and existing attorney professional development strategies for the California offices. Identify associate, partner and counsel career development needs, and design and manage the implementation of innovative programs meeting those needs.

Develop initiatives, projects, and systems to further associate, retention and promotion. Regularly interact with associates to listen to their issues and concerns; work with the Managing Partners for Legal Personnel, the Chief Legal Personnel Office and the Associate Advisory Committee to address the career and general professional development needs of associates.

Coach, counsel and provide guidance to attorneys regarding their integration into the firm and ongoing career development. Provide individual career guidance as needed.

Design training programs and instructional materials for associate career planning, and for senior lawyer coaching and mentoring of associates.

Collaborate with Firm committees, Recruiting and Legal Personnel to update and enhance new associate orientation, lateral attorney integration, mentoring, and other talent development-related programs.

Design and implement metrics, reporting systems, and tools to assess ongoing attorney needs and to evaluate the effectiveness of career development programs and initiatives; utilize results to develop new strategies and enhance firm offerings.

Monitor current trends and best practices in professional development­ implement new innovations, as appropriate, to ensure the firm's efforts are cutting edge.

Job Requirements

● A minimum of five years of coordinating law firm or professional services recruitment programs and broad-based career development experience.

● Bachelor’s degree required. A J.D. or an advanced degree in a relevant field is preferred.

● Strong project management, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

● Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

● Proficiency in MSWord, Excel, and PowerPoint. Well versed in viRecruit (preferred), or a similar recruiting database/software.

● Excellent interpersonal skills. Proven ability to work in a team environment with staff and attorneys at all levels, and to build consensus-based support for strategies and processes.

● Flexibility to work overtime as needed. Some travel required.
