Milieu Counselor – Mental Health Counselor

(Social Work / Nonprofit Behavioral Health & Social Services)

 



Job Responsibilities

 

As a Milieu Counselor, you will be responsible for supervising and serving as a primary counselor for your assigned children and adolescents in a residential treatment setting. This will involve, organizing and conducting planned activities for groups and individuals as well as supervising, observing, and participating in carrying out residents’ day-to-day routine and household functions, while consistently implementing all program procedures.

 

Specific duties for this nonprofit social services role include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Overseeing the daily care of the children in the program, including helping consumers to maintain their personal hygiene, social guidance, use of leisure time, and food planning and preparation
  • Escorting clients on trips and outings and supervising activities
  • Working one-on-one with clients who display significant stress, or assisting with management issues as they relate to clients, as needed
  • Performing therapeutic holds should a child be out of control, as needed
  • Attending appropriate training prior to performing therapeutic holds
  • Driving the child to medical, social or other necessary appointments, or assisting in returning clients to the campus who are AWOL
  • Sharing experiences and closely observing the children under care with the treatment team and immediately bringing to the attention of the supervisor any unusual issues
  • Cooking/preparing meals for residents within their cottage or division

Job Requirements

We are looking for a Mental Health Counselor who combines a caring, patient, and adaptable personality, with independent problem-solving skills to carry out different residential. In this position, you should be able to provide a positive and efficient guidance to children and adolescents on their day-to-day activities and promote their independency. It is also important that you display excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to interact in a professional and empathetic manner with both residents and caregiving staff.

 

Specific qualifications for this behavioral health nonprofit role include:

 

  • High school diploma or GED; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or related field, preferred 
  • Current and valid driver’s license to safely operate vehicles and transport residents, as needed
  • Willingness and commitment to complete necessary trainings
  • Schedule flexibility
  • Experience working with children in a residential setting, preferred
