Job Description

The Policy Director in Safe Horizon’s Government Affairs Office will enhance the organization’s ability to engage and influence lawmakers and policy makers on budgetary and legislative matters that affect the organization and the victims of violence and abuse who seek our assistance.  The Policy Director will be tasked with helping to build grassroots support here in New York and in key districts around the country to increase lawmakers’ and policy makers’ knowledge base about proven programs and services that remove barriers to safety, and to preserve – and hopefully grow – federal investments in these and other programs and services. The Policy Director will also engage in direct advocacy with key lawmakers, staff and others who are in position to favorably influence federal budget and policy decisions.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Policy Director will provide support to the VP of Government Affairs on budget, policy and legislative matters, and perform a range of tasks, including:

  • Conducting targeted outreach to City, State and Federal elected and appointed officials to broaden awareness of Safe Horizon and issues facing our clients;

  • Regularly interfacing with local, state and national coalitions, providers and advocates to build grassroots support for robust funding for victim services programs and enactment of sensible, client-centered policy and legislation;

  • Drafting memos of support/opposition for City/State/Federal budgetary and legislative proposals;

  • Drafting testimony for City/State/Federal hearings on legislation/budget matters;

  • Attending government affairs consultant meetings and coordinating the follow-up response where needed;

  • Regularly interfacing with Safe Horizon program staff to stay on top of emerging issues facing our programs and the clients we serve;

  • Traveling to Albany and/or Washington periodically throughout the year.

  • Performs other related tasks as needed.

Job Requirements

SKILLS:

Successful candidates must have:

  • Excellent writing and communication skills;

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing and diverse environment.

  • At least 4 years of budget & policy advocacy experience in NYC, NYS or Washington;

  • Professional approach in engaging with lawmakers and policy makers;

  • Excellent organizational skills;

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with an ability to engage effectively with diverse personalities;

  • Dynamic energy, able to multi-task and negotiate multiple demands on attention;

  • Non-judgmental approach and ability to empathize with others;

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, community empowerment, and anti-racism.

  • Bachelor’s degree desirable, or equivalent relevant experience

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
