Job Description

Tooling Project Engineer: Plastics, Thermoforming
--
direct hire with benefits –

  • LOCATION: Greater Chicago – Tinley Park / Merrillville, IN area
  • PAY RANGE: Up to $110K + bonus + relocation package
  • Equipment Type: Thermoforming, plastic extrusion, sheet extrusion, co-extrusion.
  • Background that you need:  Thermoforming, Tooling Design, Project Oversight

THE COMPANY

This is an exciting career opportunity with a medium-large, international manufacturing company with roughly a dozen facilities across North America.  The various plants in the IL – IN area provide most of the engineering and corporate support internationally. Due to this, there is heavy engineering and salaried staff support throughout the plant which shapes plant culture.  Your highly visible role makes it so that what you accomplish will greatly affect the company as a whole. Successful initiatives will be rolled out among multiple plants. You will be given novel, interesting, and ongoing problems to solve as the company develops new products, machinery, processes, and materials in efforts to keep a leading edge in the thermoformed plastic packaging industry.  The company offers very good benefits, 401K, and relocation package.

TO BE A VIABLE CANDIDATE

You need to know: the components of thermoforming / extrusion tooling, how to conduct tooling design review, thermoforming tolerances (punches & dies, bushings, class I/III), use CAD software like Solidworks or AutoCAD, how to create prototypes using vendors and run trials, non-destructive product testing, the general process of plastic sheet extrusion and thermoforming.

THE JOB: Project Engineer, Tooling Engineer, Sr. Design Engineer

You will help lead tooling, design (oversight), and capital equipment efforts from cradle to grave and will work closely with the director of engineering. This sheet extrusion and thermoforming manufacturing plant runs large format lines.  The environment is not ‘job shop,’ rather ‘corporate engineering and manufacturing.’  This is not a sit-down-and-draft role, rather will involve design and prototyping oversight. Your job will be more in line with offering support to tooling, equipment, and NPD projects in their various phases from concept to post-production support. For example: stage gate and NPD efforts, prototyping, qualifying, running trials, running measurements with lab equipment, product testing (CMM, OTR, MUTR), assuring initial runs meet customer specifications (PPK, CPK – packaging spec’s), initial runs and product launching. The role will involve a mixture of tooling and new plastic product development and commercialization.  Again, for each phase, you will not necessarily be the one using Solidworks for design, conducting product testing in the lab or dealing with process development for 8 hours straight – rather you will be pushing projects along providing the support where needed. If there is a “focus" of the role, it would be with tooling design and assuring prototypes meet customer specifications.

Job Requirements

  • 100% Required: Completed Engineering degree: Mechanical Engineering (BSME), Industrial Engineering (BSIE), Plastics Engineering, Materials Engineering.
  • 100% Required: Plastic Thermoforming experience in Project / Design related role
