Job Description

Position Responsibility Overview:

Vice President (VP) of Government Affairs will be responsible for managing Protective’s government affairs program at the federal level. This position will be based in Washington D.C. with frequent travel to our Birmingham, AL corporate headquarters.

The VP will represent Protective in the dialogue regarding relevant federal government affairs matters. He/she will be highly skilled at anticipating, identifying and addressing emerging federal government affairs issues that affect Protective’s business.

The VP reports directly to the Senior VP, Government Affairs and will work with various senior officers who play significant roles in governmental affairs. He/she will have responsibility for cultivating and maintaining effective relationships on behalf of the company with policymakers in key federal venues and will participate on Protective’s behalf in critical trade associations and with relevant industry groups and coalitions. As appropriate, the VP will assist the Senior VP in international matters.

Job Requirements

• Law degree
• Significant experience (10+ years) with lobbying or advocating insurance issues with members of Congress and federal regulatory bodies such as the Federal Reserve; FSOC, and FIO
• In-depth knowledge of and ability to analyze the public policy, laws and regulations affecting financial institutions, with a preference for knowledge of the life insurance field
• Significant experience (10+ years) analyzing and strategizing financial services issues at the federal level, with strong preference for such experience in the life insurance business
• Strong relationships with appropriate federal legislative and regulatory policy makers/ staff
• Strong interpersonal and relationship skills
• Demonstrated superior oral and written advocacy and communication skills
• Excellent organizational, negotiation, and administration skills; ability to balance competing demands
• Excellent management and leadership skills
• Adept with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
• Knowledge and experience with the NAIC and state-based regulation and legislation of insurance preferred
• Knowledge and experience with international regulation of insurance and the IAIS is a positive
• Creative and flexible thinker, able to work effectively with business leaders to advance company objectives
