Smoky Mountain Center (SMC) is a local management entity, managed care organization (LME-MCO) that manages all state and Medicaid funding for individuals in need of behavioral health and intellectual/developmental disability services in a catchment area that includes Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Caldwell, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, McDowell, Swain, Watauga, and Wilkes counties. All of SMC’s administrative offices are nestled in the mountains and foothills of Western North Carolina. SMC is a political subdivision of the State of North Carolina that offers a comprehensive benefit package, including the NC State Retirement Program.
