Get Intrigued by Our Legacy

The Los Angeles Times has been Southern California’s information source since publishing its first edition in 1881, a four-page newspaper under the name of the Los Angeles Daily Times. Over the next few decades, the Los Angeles Times became a newspaper of unequaled strength.

Today, The Times is the largest metropolitan daily newspaper in the country, with a daily readership of nearly 2.2 million and about 3.3 million on Sunday. Its editorial department is one of most formidable in the world - 19 foreign news bureaus, 10 national and three state bureaus - and the largest news gathering operation in California and the West.

In addition to being the largest, The Times is also one of the most honored daily newspapers. Since winning its first Pulitzer Prize in 1942, The Los Angeles Times has been awarded a total of 37 Pulitzer Prizes.

And with its media businesses and affiliates - including latimes.com, calendarlive.com, TheEnvelope.com, Times Community Newspapers, Recycler Classifieds, CareerBuilder, cars.com, Hoy, and California Community News - the Los Angeles Times reaches approximately 7.6 million or 58 percent of all adults in the Southern California marketplace every week.

In June 2000, The Los Angeles Times became part of Tribune Company. Tribune is one of the country’s leading media companies with businesses in publishing, broadcasting and the Internet in 23 major US markets.

But beyond our size, scope, readership and journalistic excellence, our influence is the real story.

The Los Angeles Times has helped shaped this city, politically, culturally and intellectually. And continues to do so. With our stories, our voice, our sponsorship of major cutural events. The Times has come a long way from the fledgling four-page newspaper it was in 1881. But it’s core mission remains: to connect with and be a trusted source for this vast Southern California audience.
