Founded in 1982, SFNTC was just a little niche natural tobacco company for many years. But in the early 2000s, our unique philosophy and business model caught the attention of major players in the tobacco industry.
At first, we were apprehensive about associating ourselves with what was often called "Big Tobacco" and the perceived bureaucracy that comes with it. We were concerned that the acquisition might mean losing control of all we had built from the ground up. And most importantly, losing sight of the company vision that had brought us to such a pivotal and milestone moment.
Fortunately, these worries were soon put to rest. Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company has been able to continue doing things our way, and we have support in growing our company and furthering our many environmental initiatives.
Reynolds American Inc., a publicly traded company and member of the S&P 500 and, later, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, became the parent company of Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company in 2002.
Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company is looking for talented, creative professionals who want to work in a fast-paced, diverse and progressive environment. We believe that every employee deserves to be treated fairly, equitably and with respect. Our organization values the diversity of individuals and their ideals, backgrounds and perspectives.
Many Santa Fe-based employees reflect the city’s history and cultural diversity — American Indian, Hispanic and Anglo. Most of the North Carolina-based employees have deep roots in tobacco, from their own family farms to working for other, now gone, tobacco manufacturers. Our trade marketers are literally from all over the country and bring a wide variety of experiences to their jobs.
If there is one thing all SFNTC employees have in common, it’s taking time to break bread together. Simply making the time to enjoy the fruits of our labor, and the company of such amazing and interesting people. In Santa Fe, regular company luncheons feature New Mexican fare, with plenty of red and green chili on the side. While in Oxford, employees enjoy regular pig pickins, the traditional barbecue feast of North Carolina.
Yes, we have a strong commitment to premium products, made with additive-free tobacco. Yes, we believe in being environmentally responsible. And yes, building and maintaining strong relationships within our company and community are paramount.
Immediately, we started building these strong company relationships by giving each and every SFNTC employee a voice in the crafting of our company vision. It took multiple years, a lot of energy, thought and emotion from all participants to arrive at the arduous piece of artwork you see above, and it was well worth it.
After hours of interviews with employees and many exhausting brainstorming sessions, a final group of passionate SFNTC employees were sequestered in a local hotel conference room with a final goal — to emerge with an all-encompassing vision.
With a facilitator running the show and emotions running high, the group decided to take a break and decompress for a minute. Some in the group decided to take a smoke break. When they returned, what spilled out and on to a white sheet of paper seemed to come together in a flash. New words frantically being taped over the old. Eraser marks smudged out the almost correct and gave way to the perfectly said.
Within minutes of that break, one clear and concise path for the future of Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company could be seen, and it’s these same words that continue to guide us into the future.
