JDRF has made a bold impact on the research landscape by setting the agenda for type 1 diabetes research worldwide. We are not just funding basic science, but taking scientific developments and trans lating them into treatments, drugs, and therapies. We are finding and filling gaps in research to bring about a cure as quickly as possible. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
Currently, JDRF is funding more than 42 human clinical trials-testing drugs and therapies in people-the most ever for diabetes. At the beginning of the decade, we were funding only five human clinical trials-this is a clear indication that the pace of research leading to a cure is accelerating.
Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.3 billion to diabetes research, including more than $156 million in fiscal year 2008, when the Foundation funded more than 1,000 centers, grants in laboratories, hospitals, and industry, and fellowships in 22 countries.
Through volunteers and staff at more than 100 locations worldwide, JDRF also provides social, emotional, and pra ctical support to children and adults who have type 1 diabetes, and to their families. JDRF offers a diverse outreach program, including family-to-family support provided by local chapters, extensive information on www.jdrf.org, a variety of online and print publications, JDRF¹s unique Online Diabetes Support Team, and an online social network, www.juvenation.org.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International uniquely sets the diabetes research agenda, laser focuses on the most promising opportunities, nimbly shifts that focus to take advantage of new scientific breakthroughs or gaps, intelligently engages others to complement and supplement our efforts, and continuously builds scientific success upon scientific success. Through these efforts, our illuminating hope - a world without diabetes - will become a reality.
