Overview
Texas Oncology is a statewide network of physicians and nurses exclusively dedicated to serving oncology patients.

Founded in 1986, Texas Oncology began as a vision of several medical oncologists at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. The founding physicians were motivated by their desire to deliver sophisticated cancer care to underserved communities. Under the leadership of Dr. Merrick Reese, they initiated an outreach program that, over time, expanded advanced oncology care throughout Texas and into New Mexico.

Besides community outreach, the initial vision of the partnership included a unique cancer care delivery system. As a result, Texas Oncology developed the concept, design and implementation of the community-based, outpatient, multidisciplinary cancer center.

Cancer Patient Evacuation Procedures

As flood waters rise in El Paso, and residents prepare for possible evacuation from their homes, it is crucial that cancer patients are well prepared to ensure that they still have access to their vital healthcare amenities and treatments.
While cancer patients may not be going far to escape the flooding, the tips below will inform them about what to do now, in case they are forced to leave their homes for an extended amount of time.

TIP #1: TALK ABOUT IT

Tell someone close to you – a family member, friend, neighbor – where you will be. Provide this person with the address and phone number of the new location where you can be reached. Contact your doctor to advise him/her of your whereabouts and to find a medical contact where you will be.

TIP #2: KNOW YOUR TREATMENTS – PAST AND PRESENT

Make note of your current medications and dosages, current and recent treatments, and other dietary and health needs. Store this information in a waterproof container and take it with you. Ask your doctor if you will need additional prescriptions to cover your evacuation time. Remember to take your prescriptions with you.

TIP #3: KNOW YOUR NUMBERS

Keep handy the name of your doctor, his/her office address and phone number, as well as the contact information for alternative treatment facilities. In addition, record the name of your pharmacy and its phone number. Keep this information with your medical history, and if possible, store the phone numbers in your cell phone.

TIP #4: KNOW YOUR COVERAGE

Know what insurance coverage you have in other communities and what doctors and medical facilities are available to you. Be sure to take your insurance card with you. Document ownership of any medical equipment in case it is lost or stolen. Keep this information with your medical records.

TIP #5: KNOW YOUR OPTIONS

Identify an alternative facility where you can continue to receive treatment. Cancer care for displaced patients is available at any of the 98 Texas Oncology comprehensive cancer centers across the state, including two in El Paso and one in Las Cruces. Patients who relocate may call 888-864-ICAN (4226) or visit www.texasoncology.com to locate a nearby practice or another center in the state where they can receive treatments during evacuation.

Patients may use the disaster preparedness form on Texas Oncology’s Web site, www.texasoncology.com, to list all of their important information – emergency contacts, insurance information, physicians’ contact information, medications and helpful resources.
