Research Demonstrates Improved Clinical Control in Diabetes Population
Nashville, Tenn. – May 15, 2007 – Disease management programs improve adherence to diabetes standards of care for Medicare Advantage patients, according to a Healthways Center for Health Research study presented at the recent Third Annual World Congress Leadership Summit on Medicare. Authorized by the 2003 Medicare Modernization Act, Medicare Advantage plans have special flexibility to offer patients disease management and other complementary care services not available through traditional Medicare coverage.
“Healthways is pleased to contribute its findings to the growing body of research pointing toward the fact that disease management programs drive adherence to established diabetes standards of care and, as a result, provide the necessary systems of support to enable individuals to achieve their personal best health,” said Healthways Chief Medical Officer Dexter Shurney, M.D. MPH.
Healthways Senior Medical Director Virginia Gurley, M.D., MPH, presented the study: Improved Clinical Control in a Medicare Advantage Diabetes Population, which followed more than 1,500 Medicare Advantage plan members for a two-year period to assess adherence to diabetes care guidelines.
Key findings from the study include:
Medicare Advantage members of all ages benefited from participation in Healthways’ diabetes disease management program.
Participation in Healthways’ diabetes disease management program led to improved A1C and LDL testing and clinical values for the Medicare Advantage population.
Participation in Healthways’ diabetes disease management program increased the number of Medicare Advantage members with appropriate A1C and LDL clinical control.
