Cancer Care Centers of South Texas One of Nine Clinical Trial Study Sites, Results Included in the Prestigious New England Journal of Medicine

People with a rare, life-threatening autoimmune disease are finding hope for leading normal lives because of the findings from clinical trials underway at Cancer Care Centers of South Texas. Chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly. The bleeding is caused by a low number of platelets (thrombocytes), the small blood fragments that are produced in the bone marrow. Platelets help the blood clot and stop bleeding.

Individuals with chronic ITP face the risk of bleeding to death, and in severe cases, they become home bound to avoid any incidents—from a slight bump against an object or another person to traveling by air--that could cause bleeding.

Current therapies for treating ITP are largely directed at decreasing platelet destruction. Preliminary findings of the clinical trials underway at Cancer Care Centers of South Texas suggest that based on the use of AMG 531, a thrombopoietic growth factor, chronic ITP is in part the result of low platelet production. This discovery could lead to a dramatic change in the treatment of patients with ITP and may be the first step in changing the way other diseases related to low blood platelet counts, such as various cancers, are treated.

So innovative are the results that the clinical trial was featured in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine in the October 19, 2006 issue (N Engl J Med 355;16), in an article entitled, "AMG 531, A Thrombopoiesis-Stimulating Protein, for Chronic ITP".

Roger M. Lyons, M.D., F.A.C.P., Hematologist with Cancer Care Centers of South Texas, and co-author of the article, is the principal investigator in San Antonio. CCCST is one of nine sites involved in two sequential trials. The trial sites include such renowned medical research organizations as New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.

Normally platelet counts number between 150,000 and 450,000, but a person with ITP may have a platelet count of just 20,000. The study focused on patients who had failed all other treatments for chronic ITP, including corticosteroid drugs and surgical removal of the spleen.
