Founded:
The Kansas City Star was founded Sept. 18, 1880, by William Rockhill Nelson. In 1901 he bought The Kansas City Times. After the death of his daughter in 1926, the papers were purchased by employees and remained in their control until the sale to Capital Cities Communications in 1977. In 1990, the afternoon paper ceased to exist, however, its name, The Kansas City Star, was retained for the new morning paper. In January, 1996, the Walt Disney Co. acquired Capital Cities/ABC, and become owner of The Star. The Disney Co. sold the Star and several other newspapers to Knight Ridder in May 1997.
The Star is published seven days a week and has its main office in Kansas City, Mo. It operates three bureaus in Missouri (Independence, Kansas City North and Jefferson City) and three in Kansas (Topeka, Overland Park and Kansas City). The newspaper is one of the largest daily publications in the Midwest.
