In March 2004 for the fifth consecutive year, UPS was named among America’s Top Corporations for Women Business Enterprises by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the leading third-party certifier of businesses owned and operated by women. African-Americans, Hispanics, Asian-Pacific Americans and other minorities make up 35 percent of the company’s 317,000 employees in the United States.

Minorities accounted for half of UPS’s new employees in 2003.

Women represent 27 percent of the U.S. management team and 21 percent of the overall workforce, holding jobs from package handlers, to drivers, to senior management and to the UPS Board of Directors.

Among the company’s 58,000 U.S. managers, minorities hold nearly 30 percent of those executive positions. Positions held include district managers, the UPS Management Committee, and UPS’s Board of Directors.

UPS Diversity Steering Council
UPS expects diversity to be fostered and encouraged by every UPSer in their daily commitment to the company.

UPS also has a Diversity Steering Council whose vision is to "ensure that workforce, customer, and supplier diversity remain a visible core value that is integral to our business, our community relationships, and The UPS Charter."

The UPS Diversity Steering Council is co-chaired by Chairman and CEO Mike Eskew, and Senior Vice President, Human Resources Lea Soupata. This cross-functional council consists of internal and external representatives.

College

Education and training are core values of UPS's unique culture. Whether the employee is a high school student, a college student or an individual who is making the transition from welfare to work, UPS offers a variety of initiatives that help employees attain their educational and career goals. The company's strong promotion from within policy develops today's part-time employees into tomorrow's executives. Because of this, UPS provides opportunities for employees to pursue higher education as well as training programs that prepare them for current and future jobs within the company. Several members of UPS's management committee started in part-time positions.

Since 1999, UPS has paid out more than $47 million in tuition assistance and has helped more than 30,000 student employees attend college. In addition to providing generous tuition assistance and loan benefits, UPS spends about $300 million a year on employee training programs.

Earn and Learn
How can you earn up to $20,000 towards your college education? Simply by working part-time at UPS.

Available in 51 UPS locations across the country, the UPS Earn and Learn program offers $3,000 per calendar year with a lifetime maximum of $15,000 in assistance. For part-time management employees, the benefits are increased to $4,000 per calendar year with a lifetime maximum of $20,000.

In addition to tuition assistance, part-time employees are eligible for forgivable student loans of $2,000 per calendar year with an $8,000 lifetime maximum.

Students are eligible for Earn and Learn the day they are hired and benefits are pro-rated accordingly if a student is hired mid-semester.
