Overview
The Advertiser was founded in 1856 as the weekly Pacific Commercial Advertiser and became a daily in 1882. It moved into its current home, now called the News Building, in 1929. In the mid-1950s, The Advertiser became a driving force for social progress in Hawaii and rallied support for statehood.
In 1962, a Joint Operating Agreement combined the morning Advertiser's non-news functions with those of the afternoon Honolulu Star-Bulletin, and the Hawaii Newspaper Agency was formed. Gannett purchased the Star-Bulletin in 1971. In 1993, Gannett purchased the Honolulu Advertiser. Simultaneously, Gannett sold the Star-Bulletin to Liberty Newspapers Limited Partnership and Liberty became a partner in the newspaper agency. In 2001, the JOA was terminated and the Advertiser began publishing a morning and afternoon edition. The Honolulu Advertiser publishes in the morning, seven days a week; the afternoon Advertiser is published Monday through Saturday.
Vision
The Honolulu Advertiser's mission is to chronicle Hawai'i's story while being a vigilant partner in helping the Islands shape their future. To be diligent, truthful, accurate and fair. To provide a voice for all of the community. To reflect a love and understanding of this place and its people. To honor Hawai'i's ethnic, cultural and social diversity. To cherish the land and sea. To perpetuate the qualities of aloha -- tolerance, humility, sharing and respect. To inform, educate and entertain. To be Hawai'i's newspaper.
