STBTC has operated as a community not-for-profit blood center for more than 30 years and has provided advanced testing services for blood screening, medical testing, and clinical research.
QualTex was established September 1, 2007, as a tax-exempt affiliate of the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC). QualTex will serve as the testing services division of STBTC and at present screens millions of whole blood and plasma donations for infectious agents each year for biotechnology companies locally and across the globe.
As an internationally recognized facility for our services and research, QualTex Laboratories is looking forward to providing the same standard of service excellence as provided under the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center name.

South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC) is a not-for-profit, independent, community blood center specializing in quality blood, blood components, tissue services, and specialized testing. Our service area consists of more than 100 hospitals and clinics in 43 counties in the south Texas area. STBTC has three in-bank donor locations in San Antonio, and one in Victoria, Texas. The Marrow Donor Program of Central and South Texas has the goal of reaching the 100,000 registrant mark in 2005. The National Marrow Donor Program’s mission is to extend and improve life through innovative stem cell therapies.
STBTC’s tissue program enables the collection of bone, skin, heart valves, veins, ligaments and tendons. These life-enhancing tissues can be used for vascular transplants, bypass surgery, renal dialysis, hip replacements and skin grafts.
The establishment of the Texas Cord Blood Bank holds great promise for bringing new life-saving therapies to many patients. This program will implement the scientifically complex process of collecting, processing and storing cord blood donations.
QualTex Laboratories:
Viral Marker Testing
QualTex Laboratories conducts a variety of viral marker testing to include: Anti-HIV ½, Anti-HCV, HBsAg, Anti-HTLV I/II and Anti-HBc. Additionally, we offer ALT, SERUM Protein Electrphoresis, Syphilis, Total Protein, ABO/Rh, CMV, Cholesterol, Antibody screens, and Chagas’ Disease testing.
Source Plasma & Whole Blood NAT Testing
QualTex’s NAT laboratory performs the following NAT assays: HIV, HCV, HBV, HAV, West Nile Virus and Parvo B-19. Each assay meets industry standards for whole blood and/or source plasma testing.
Specialized Testing
QualTex performs the following confirmatory assays: HIV-1 Western Blot, HIV-2 EIA, HCV RIBA, HBsAg Neutralization (PRISM), TP-PA (Syphilis Confirmatory). Titers and other assays are performed upon request.
Reference Consultation Services
QualTex performs compatibility testing (ABO & Rh, antibody screen and crossmatch). Consult services such as antibody ID and antibody titers are offered; additionally, red blood cell phenotyping is also available by the following methods: serology and genotyping.
Component QC Testing
QualTex offers factor VIII and Fibrinogen testing for Cryoprecipitate, Fresh Frozen Plasma and recovered Plasma. We also perform white blood cell counts on leuko-reduced products such as red blood cells and apheresis platelets.

STBTC’s laboratory testing services to continue operations under new name
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (Aug. 17, 2007) – The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC) is excited to announce that it has established a new tax-exempt subsidiary, QualTex Laboratories , to perform the testing services currently organized under the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center name. The new name will take effect September 1, 2007.
The testing services division screens millions of whole blood and plasma donations for infectious agents each year for biotechnology companies locally and across the globe, which requires unique regulatory oversight. QualTex Laboratories , an affiliate of STBTC , is registered as a clinical laboratory provider by both state and federal agencies. All operations, management and staffing of testing services will remain unchanged.
