Bluegreen Corporation® began with a simple, yet novel, idea more than 30 years ago. People in rural areas wanted to sell land. People in urban areas wanted to trade city life for a pastoral pace. The result was a land development company that saw rapid expansion during the next two decades. In 1985, Bluegreen® went public, trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
George F. Donovan, the former president of Fairfield Communities, Inc., joined the board of directors in 1991 and was named president and chief executive officer three years later. That same year, Bluegreen® introduced its first timeshare resort, MountainLoft, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. In 1997, Bluegreen® widened its portfolio of resort offerings through the acquisition of Resort Development International®, and subsequently launched the points-based Vacation Club to take advantage of the increased variety of vacation opportunities.
By 1999, Bluegreen® ranked as one of the world’s top-10 timeshare resort developers and operators. In recognition of the company’s success, Fortune magazine named Bluegreen® one of the year’s 100 Fastest Growing Companies in the U.S.
Today, Bluegreen® acquires, develops, and manages vacation resorts, exurban homesteads, and golf communities throughout the U.S. From its origins as a land development company, Bluegreen® has evolved to focus on satisfying the American desire for colorful places to live and play.
