Hannaford Supermarkets Introduces Microwave Steam Bags
New concept saves time and encourages healthy eating by retaining flavor, texture and nutritional value of food

(SCARBOROUGH, ME)---A disposable pressure cooker? That’s how Hannaford Supermarkets describes their new microwaveable steam bags. The patented microporous venting system operates in a controlled fashion, allowing up to 10 ounces of fresh vegetables to cook in less than four minutes in a 1,000-watt microwave.
The major selling feature of the new bags is that they allow foods to retain more natural flavors, texture, and nutritional value by regulating the amount of steam that escapes through the venting system. Additionally, the bag’s zipper feature allows consumers to preseason their favorite foods before steaming.
According to Hannaford Category Manager Edward Crockett, "This technology makes it easier for consumers to get their recommended number of servings of vegetables and steam their favorite foods, such as seafood, poultry, vegetables, and fruit in a matter of minutes."
The steam bags are not recommended for red meat. Cooking times may vary so consumers should check the information on the box.
"Making these bags available to consumers is also consistent with our goal of making nutrition, wellness, and health easier for the consumer," Crockett said.
Hannaford recently introduced two sizes of the microwaveable steam bags for consumers looking for a fast and convenient method of steaming vegetables and other foods. The quart and gallon-sized microwave-safe bags are packaged under the Hannaford private label and are sold in Hannaford stores in Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Massachusetts and Vermont.
The quart-sized bags sell for $2.99 and the half-gallon bags sell for $3.99 in packages of ten.
"This technology represents the next generation of steam packaging," said Crockett. "It’s the perfect solution for time-pressed consumers who are looking for quick, nutritious ways to prepare meals," he said.
Global Source Packaging, Inc. (GSPI) of Kansas City, Missouri City distributes the bags.
