MedVance Institute, formerly known as Cumberland School of Medical Technology, was established in June 1970 in Cookeville, Tennessee with a program of study for Medical Laboratory Technicians. The school was founded to provide career opportunities in the allied health professions. Graduates of the school are employed throughout the region and surrounding states in hospital laboratories, reference laboratories, medical businesses and industry.
In 1970, the school was approved by the Tennessee Department of Public Health, Laboratory Licensing Service to operate a school for Medical Laboratory Technicians. This department approves the curriculum and each hospital laboratory participating in the school's training program.
The school was accredited in 1971 by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) for its Medical Laboratory Technician Program on the recommendation of the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), the Review Committee sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), the American Society for Medical Technology (ASMT), and the American Medical Technologists (AMT). In 1971, the Medical Laboratory Technician Program was accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
In 1988, the school was accredited by the Commission on Occupational Education Institutions of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS/COEI) and the school changed its name from Cumberland School of Medical Technology to Cumberland School of Technology.
In 1990, the school met the requirements of the State Department of Education and the Louisiana Proprietary School Commission for licensing and became an approved institution to offer instruction in career and occupational education in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
In 1991, the branch school was accredited by the Commission on Occupational Education Institutions of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS/COEI).
In the 1992-93 school year, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission approved the Associate of Applied Science Degree for Medical Laboratory Technology. In the 1992-93 school year, the Louisiana Department of Education approved the Associate in Occupational Studies Degree for Medical Laboratory Technology.
In May of 2000 KIMC Investments, L.P. acquired both campuses of Cumberland School of Technology. The school name was changed to MedVance Institute in July 2000 and two new programs, Medical Assistant and Medical Coding Specialist, were added to the curriculum. In 2001 Limited X-Ray, Patient Care Technician, Dental Assistant, Phlebotomy and Radiology Technology programs were added. In November 2001, The Florida Board of Education, Commission For Independent Education granted licensure for MedVance Institute to open a campus in Atlantis, Florida. The programs offered include Bio- Medical Electronics, Medical Laboratory Technology, Radiologic Technology, Dental Assisting, Medical Assisting, Medical Coding Specialist, Medical Office Administration, Patient Care Technician and Phlebotomy.On Jan 24, 2002 the Florida Commission approved additional new programs including Pharmacy Technician, Clinical Lab Assistant and the certificate program, Nursing Assistant. In March 2002, the Council of Occupational Education approved the Atlantis, Florida location of MedVance as an accredited branch of the main campus located in Cookeville, Tennessee.
