Ethan Allen Interiors Inc. (NYSE: ETH) launched the celebration of its 75th anniversary by ringing The Opening Bellsm at the New York Stock Exchange on January 25, 2007.
Ethan Allen was founded 1932 by Theodore Baumritter and Nathan S. Ancell. They purchased their first factory in Beecher Falls, Vermont, where they crafted Ethan Allen brand furniture. From this foundation the company established a base of manufacturing that now includes nine plants in the U.S. and an international network of 307 Ethan Allen design centers.
In 1962, the company pioneered the concept of showing furniture in room settings, the way people actually live, with the opening of the first Ethan Allen Gallery, thereby providing lifestyle solutions to consumers and also developing the Ethan Allen brand.
In 1969 the company went public as Ethan Allen Inc., and its corporate headquarters was moved to Danbury, Connecticut, in 1973. The company merged with Interco in 1979, and in 1985 Farooq Kathwari was appointed President and subsequently named chairman and CEO of Ethan Allen. In 1989, Mr. Kathwari formed a group to take the company private, and started a dramatic revitalization of the company and the brand. The product line was updated to include casual contemporary styles in addition to the formal classic styles for which Ethan Allen was so well known. By 1992 the Colonial façade was replaced with a new classic exterior that better reflected the styles inside. The company adopted a new logo, and stores and products shared the same “Ethan Allen” name. In 1993, Mr. Kathwari took the company public with a listing on the New York Stock Exchange under the trading symbol ETH, with a split adjusted stock price of $6.00 per share.
Ethan Allen Chairman and CEO Farooq Kathwari said, “As Ethan Allen celebrates its 75th anniversary, we are focused on providing decorating solutions with great personal customer service, which I call the “new luxury.” The stores have been transformed into one-stop design centers – locations that provide a number of personal services: free design consultation; walk-through lifestyle environments; custom decorating options; everyday best pricing; free local delivery; and convenient financing. Each of these services makes it easier, faster, and more affordable for people to decorate their homes in Ethan Allen's true American style.”
Today, with more than 3,000 design consultants working in over 300 Ethan Allen design centers, Ethan Allen has evolved as a leader in providing one-stop interior design solutions.
