Advances in services and technology:
- Saint Margaret Mercy offers private inpatient rooms at both the Hammond and Dyer campuses
- Saint Margaret Mercy’s Dyer Campus in Dyer, Ind., celebrated the completion of its $45 million expansion project in January 2007. The expansion project represents Saint Margaret Mercy’s commitment to building a healthier future for the communities it serves. The project included the vertical addition of two patient floors and a mechanical level over the stilted pavilion at the front of the hospital. Those floors are topped off with a Federal Aviation Administration-approved heliport for emergency transport. The project also included the construction of an outpatient center offering imaging diagnostics, laboratory services and radiation oncology
- Saint Margaret Mercy is among a select group of U.S. hospitals, and was the first (and second) in Northwest Indiana, equipped with industry-leading 64-slice computed tomography (CT) technology. There is one scanner at our Hammond Campus and two at our Dyer Campus. The 64-slice CT scanner delivers high-speed, high-resolution imaging. Physicians can capture precise images of any area of the body, whether bone or tissue structure or rapidly moving organs like the heart, while minimizing the patient’s radiation exposure
- Saint Margaret Mercy’s Hammond Campus is home to the first two-person hyperbaric oxygen chamber in the Calumet area. The system administers oxygen to patients at greater than normal pressure to treat specific medical indications. It has proven effective in treating problem wounds, chronic bone infections, radiation injury and compromised skin grafts
- Saint Margaret Mercy offers a comprehensive cardiovascular services program to address patients’ needs - ranging from prevention, advanced diagnostic procedures and medical intervention to open-heart surgery - coupled with a commitment to producing positive outcomes and providing unparalleled patient care. Experience, high-tech diagnostic and treatment capabilities, and state-of-the-art facilities characterize our heart program
- The Dyer Campus opened a new cardiac catheterization lab in 2004, doubling its previous size. The Cath Lab suites include the latest imaging equipment, which is fully digital and allows physicians to capture and view the most detailed images of coronary arteries. The system exposes patients to less radiation during procedures than other systems. Physicians use the cath labs to conduct minimally invasive procedures to treat a wide range of clinical problems including coronary and carotid artery disease and other peripheral vascular disorders. The Hammond and Dyer campus cath labs have a telemedicine system that allows real-time transfer of images between campuses as well as remote locations which makes physician consultation during a case possible
- Saint Margaret Mercy’s Oncology Center in Hammond is recognized as one of the top hospitals for cancer treatment in the Midwest, and the center is fully accredited by the American College of Radiology and the American College of Surgeons. In 2007, Saint Margaret Mercy’s Oncology Center expanded to a second location at our Dyer Campus. The Oncology Center offers university-level care, advanced technology, a holistic approach and the services of a renowned staff. Participation in national clinical trials offers patients the most innovative treatments and technologies available to conquer cancer. The Oncology Center offers: 3-D computed tomography simulation system; 3-D conformal radiotherapy; Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy; linear accelerator-based stereotactic radiosurgery for brain tumors; CT-guided prostate seed implants; high-dose-rate, remote-after-loading brachytherapy; coronary artery brachytherapy; diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, biologic response modifiers and blood transfusions

The program – a collaborative effort between Saint Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers and Lake County Superior Courts – provides trained and supervised volunteers to serve as court appointed Limited Guardians to assist this vulnerable population and the courts in decision-making regarding these critical needs
- The St. Francis Center provides an adolescent resident treatment program for male and female youths, who would be unsuccessful unless in a highly structured environment
