Select Health’s Medical Director Receives “Order of the Palmetto” and Opens New Healthcare Center

Columbia, SC - At the corner of Harden and Lady Streets (1228 Harden), sits the new Maternal-Child Health Center and headquarters of the Cooperative Health Centers, Inc., a mission-driven organization that provides quality primary healthcare to families, regardless of socio-economic status. Patients, friends, and supporters of the Cooperative are invited to an open house on Friday, April 27th, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The new facility houses the expanded Waverly Women’s Healthcare, which is the Cooperative’s ob/gyn department, a satellite pharmacy, x-ray, lab, and a pediatric and adolescent episodic walk-in care operating twelve hours a day Monday through Saturday.

“This new facility will allow the community to have easier access to quality primary and preventive healthcare,” says Dr. Stuart Hamilton, Founder and Director of the Cooperative. “Many families without options use the hospital emergency room as an expensive and difficult route to health care, but this new facility and service will present a more appropriate choice. The Cooperative provides a “medical home” where on-going care is available and relationships are built with our patients that can last throughout their lifespan, so that emergency room visits and hospitalizations become a last resort.”

Hamilton, who has taken his passion for medicine and used it to positively strengthen the disadvantaged population, will be presented the Order of the Palmetto Award during the open house ceremony. The honor, which is bestowed by the governor, is South Carolina's highest civilian award and recognizes a lifetime of humanitarian action.

“I've known Dr. Hamilton for over ten years and he’s always been engaged in the community,” says Mike Jernigan, President and CEO of Select Health of South Carolina. “Under his leadership, the Cooperative has tirelessly served the community in the spirit of the good Samaritan.”

Select Health, the state’s oldest and most experienced managed Medicaid provider where Hamilton serves as Medical Director, is a proud supporter of the Cooperative Health Centers, Inc.

Open house festivities include live entertainment, food, and kid-friendly activities.
