Sterling Life Insurance Company was established in 1958. In 1999, Sterling contracted with its sister company, Olympic Health Management Systems, Inc., to develop products for the rapidly expanding market comprised primarily of older Americans. Sterling’s national licensing and Olympic’s expertise in designing products and services exclusively related to the Medicare population have blended to form a team that is stable, innovative, and responsive to the needs of clients and beneficiaries.
Today, Sterling offers a variety of products and services to fit the needs of Medicare Beneficiaries. The combined staffing of the two sister companies has grown to over 500 talented and diversified people working together to achieve a number of industry “firsts.”
Sterling was the first to successfully contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for a newly-authorized product, Private Fee For Service (PFFS). By incorporating this plan into its already established Standard Medicare and Medicare Select insurance plans, Sterling became the first to offer this mix of products in one platform. It is believed Sterling was also the first to allow enrollees/policyholders to move between health plans as their needs change without additional underwriting — an extraordinary feature we call Choice and Mobility.
Today Sterling is licensed in 40 states, plus Washington, D.C., and has offices spanning the nation. The company recently added other products and services to its platform: Whole Life, Limited Benefit Whole Life and two value added packages of discounted services including prescription drugs.
The products and services will not stop here. Our Business Development Team is constantly looking for new programs that will benefit the Medicare market. New variations on plans authorized under The Balanced Budget Act of 1997 and The Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 are in the works. Interactive web capabilities will soon join the list of many advantages Sterling customers share.
Sterling is rated “A-” (Excellent) by A.M. Best. Combined Insurance Company of America, Sterling’s parent company, has earned an “A” (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best.* Sterling, Olympic and Combined are subsidiaries of Aon Corporation, a holding company that is comprised of a family of insurance brokerage, consulting and insurance underwriting subsidiaries.
With the Medicare market booming, the future looks very bright for Sterling. Sterling has the right products, the right partners, the right audience, and the right people.
The number of Americans age 65 and over has increased more than eleven-fold since 1900. In 2000, there were an estimated 35 million people age 65 and over in the United States, accounting for over 12 percent of the total population or one in eight Americans.
In 2011, the 77 million members of the “Baby Boom” generation will begin to turn 65. By 2030, it is projected that one in five people, or a full 20 percent of the population, will be age 65 or older. And, between 2000 and 2030, the size of this population is projected to double, growing to over 70 million.
These statistics point to an ever-expanding market and unlimited potential for Sterling and its Sales Agents. This market is also the most affluent in the country, controlling 75% of the nation’s wealth or about 7 trillion dollars of assets.
Seniors utilize healthcare services more than any other age group, and many rely on their healthcare providers for information on Medicare coverage. With this in mind, Sterling has developed a product orientation specifically directed towards physicians and hospitals. This process gives healthcare providers a comprehensive understanding of Sterling’s products and a toll-free number to call if they have any questions prior to recommending our products to their patients.
Most seniors have more free time than the average adult under age 65. As a group, they are up early, read more often and are home during the day. They are also concerned about protecting their assets, maintaining their lifestyle, and getting the best value for the money they spend. Sterling’s knowledge of this rapidly growing market allows us to develop marketing strategies designed to generate leads and help Sales Agents close sales. Our Sales Agents use an educational approach to selling and can offer product choices that meet the needs of our “niche
