Overview

HIMSS is a cause-based,
not-for-profit organization exclusively focused on providing global leadership
for the optimal use of information technology (IT) and management systems for
the betterment of healthcare. Founded 52 years ago, HIMSS and its related
organizations are headquartered in Chicago with additional offices in the
United States, Europe and Asia. HIMSS represents nearly 50,000 individual members,
of which more than two thirds work in healthcare provider, governmental and
not-for-profit organizations. HIMSS also includes over 570 corporate members
and more than 225 not-for-profit partner organizations that share our
mission of transforming healthcare through the effective use of information
technology and management systems. HIMSS frames and leads healthcare practices
and public policy through its content expertise, professional development,
research initiatives, and media vehicles designed to promote information and
management systems’ contributions to improving the quality, safety, access, and

Providing current and vital resources for implementation of health information technology to improve patient care, HIMSS continues to add new information to Meaningful Use OneSource, an online repository of hundreds of documents, tools and links to other knowledge available on the Internet. HIMSS11 Breaks Attendance Records
It is only day three of the 2011 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition, but I am excited to report that attendance has made history with a record number of attendees. An estimated 30,410 people are currently attending this year’s conference in Orlando, compared to an estimated 27,800 attendees at the 2010 event in Atlanta. (more)

HIMSS Electronic Health Record Association Announces New Collaboration and Responds to Stage 2 Meaningful Use Proposals at HIMSS11
The HIMSS Electronic Health Record Association (EHR Association), in the midst of its annual all-member meeting and dozens of stakeholder meetings at HIMSS11 in Orlando, FL last week, announced the newly formed EHR Vendor Communications Workgroup, the result of a collaboration agreement between the EHR Association and the Regional Extension Center (REC) Vendor Selection and Management Community of Practice (VSM CoP). The group also submitted its responses to the Health IT Policy Committee’s (HITPC) initial proposals for Stage 2 meaningful use criteria. (more)

HIMSS11 Interoperability Showcase Puts the Patient Perspective First
The HIMSS Interoperability Showcase brought together over 100 clinical information systems to demonstrate standards-based interoperability at the 2011 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 20-24. The participating organizations-considered competitors of one another in any other environment- worked together to show how patient data can move seamlessly across care settings using standards-based exchanges such as Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise profiles, Direct protocols (an initiative from the Department of Health and Human Services designed to simplify the exchange of information within the health care industry) and other initiatives. HIMSS and MGMA Collaborate to Protect Patient Health Information
No matter what the size of a medical practice or outpatient clinic, physicians, practice managers and healthcare providers must ensure the privacy and security of their patients’ health information. Recognizing small provider organizations may not have the staff or the knowledge to put these safeguards in place, HIMSS and the Medical Group Management Association created the HIMSS Privacy & Security Toolkit for Small Provider Organizations. Foundation for NIH and HIMSS Announce Strategic Partnership to Broaden Annual mHealth Summit
The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) announced today an extensive strategic partnership that will expand the already successful mHealth Summit. The largest event focused on mobile health, the 2011 mHealth Summit will be held from December 5-7 in the Washington, DC area.

HIMSS Introduces ICD-10 PlayBook and G7 Advisory Report
Working with more than 20 contributing participating organizations, HIMSS introduces theICD-10 PlayBook, a web-based resource with updated and interactive information to help healthcare providers understand, and follow, the necessary steps to meet ICD-10 deadlines. Twenty-one participants from the nation’s largest associations, healthcare providers, health plans and others met in April at the HIMSS G7 Roundtable to discuss and design this new initiative as an online resource that will help educate healthcare providers on ICD-10 transformation. The Vanderbilt Center for Better Health facilitated the meeting in Nashville, Tenn., resulting in the G7 Advisory Report – ICD-10 PlayBook. (more)

HIMSS Latino Community Launches Powerful Advisory Board to Advance its Mission
The HIMSS Latino Community, established in February 2011, announces the formation of its Advisory Board composed of leaders in healthcare, public policy and the Hispanic/Latino community who will help guide the activities of this initiative. Led by the HIMSS Latino Community, this group focuses on advancing the health IT needs for this diverse population by providing education and networking via policy analysis, national and state outreach, public/private health IT demonstration projects, networking opportunities including national and regional conferences, as well as monthly educational webinars.
