Originally established in 1987 as the American Foundation for Urologic Disease (AFUD), the organization entered a new era of service in 2005 when it consolidated its programs with the American Urological Association and a new entity was created β the American Urological Association Foundation (AUA Foundation). Through this consolidation, we are able to integrate the activities and programs of research, patient/public education and patient advocacy through a Foundation that is part of its medical specialty organization. The AUA and its Foundation can now think and act as one by linking the resources and professional expertise of the AUA and its members to address the information and education needs of patients, caregivers and the public. We know of no other medical specialty organization that has taken this approach.
The AUA Foundation is a partnership of physicians, researchers, health-care professionals, patients, caregivers, families and the public established to support and promote research, patient/public education and advocacy that improve the prevention, detection, treatment and cure of urological disease.
Our programs of research, patient education, patient advocacy and resource development continue the work begun by AFUD, but are moving in new and exciting directions, all focused on your urologic health.

The American Urological Association Foundation partners with physicians, researchers, health-care professionals, patients, caregivers, families and the public to support and promote research, patient/public education and advocacy to improve the prevention, detection, treatment and cure of urologic diseases. The vision of the Foundation is to be the premier provider and resource for the most current, comprehensive and reliable urologic health information for patients, researchers and the public.
Urology is a surgical specialty which deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. Although urology is classified as a surgical specialty, a knowledge of internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology and other specialties is required by the urologist because of the wide variety of clinical problems encountered. In recognition of the wide scope of urology, the American Urological Association has identified seven subspecialty areas:
- Pediatric Urology
- Urologic Oncology (cancer)
- Renal Transplantation
- Male Infertility
- Calculi (urinary tract stones)
- Female Urology (urinary incontinence, pelvic outlet relaxation disorders)
- Neurourology (voiding disorders, urodynamic evaluation of patients and erectile dysfunction or impotence)
