For over 45 years, YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities (YAI/NIPD) has been committed to improving the lives of people with mental retardation and developmental and learning disabilities – and to assisting them in maximizing their potential as productive, self-sufficient citizens.
The YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities Network mission is to build brighter futures for people with developmental and learning disabilities and their families.
We believe that every person, at every age and level of disability, has the potential for growth. We also believe that each individual is entitled to the same dignity, respect, and opportunities as all other members of society.
We are firmly committed to helping the people we serve to achieve their potential for independence, individuality, productivity, and inclusion in their communities.
To that end, we provide one of the nation's most comprehensive networks of programs and services to assist individuals with disabilities in maximizing their potential. We pledge to maintain the highest level of excellence and sensitivity in all that we do. The YAI/NIPD Network is committed to the pursuit of excellence.
What’s been the key to our success? Simply put, it’s our people. Numbering over 4,500, YAI/NIPD’s professional team members represent very diverse backgrounds, perspectives and skills. Each is uniquely talented, but all share a common commitment to succeeding by helping others succeed. Their work is challenging (with no two days ever alike!), but they enjoy fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment that come only from making a significant difference in the lives of many. Plus, we make sure they have the support, training and potential for advancement they need to reach their goals.
YAI/NIPD is recognized as a leader in our field, an award-winning, not-for-profit, non-sectarian agency with nearly 20,000 people through more than 300 community-based programs. With locations in New York City, Long Island, Westchester and Orange County, and Northern New Jersey (Bergen County) and Puerto Rico, our team provides a full range of early intervention, pre-school, family support, employment training and placement, clinical and residential services, and recreational and camping services.
To attract and retain the most talented people, YAI/NIPD strives to provide a total compensation package to help our team members manage their lives and reach their goals. Recognizing that individual needs can be very different, we’ve structured a flexible benefit program that allows for personal customization, as well as security and peace of mind.
