Originating in 1901, ALCO has always served as a neighborhood retailer offering a great selection of high-quality merchandise, friendly service and every day value. More than 100 years later, ALCO continues to serve small-town markets that are not consumed by larger retailers, therefore building loyalty with both our customers and the communities we serve — primarily small towns with populations of 10,000 people or fewer. Each store has its own uniqueness, as does each community.

Our specialty is to deliver a quality selection of essential products for everyday life with friendly, personal service. ALCO is continuing a conservative and steady growth plan throughout the central United States, and has introduced a new merchandising strategy to show value to our customers, including the introduction of the private label brands ‘Best Choice’ and ‘Always Save’ while still offering every day brand name products.

History
Our company has been providing an exceptional selection of quality products and recognized brand names at reasonable prices to our customers for more than 100 years. The company was founded by A. L. Duckwall in 1901 as a general merchandising operation in Abilene, Kansas. He incorporated the stores under Kansas laws, on July 2, 1915. Until 1968 Duckwall stores operated as small variety stores, often known as dime stores.

In 1968, the company followed an emerging trend towards discount retailing, opening its first ALCO discount store. At the same time, the company made a decision that while it was growing, it would keep the hometown Duckwall stores in smaller communities (pop. 1,500) too.

By the late 1980's, the company was ready to grow. ALCO adopted the current business strategy of opening stores in small town markets (pop. 3,000-14,000) while still retaining its hometown values, excellent product selection and friendly service. Before long, it had built a national reputation on customer service.

Today, that formula for success has helped the company to grow from a single store in Abilene, Kansas, to a full-line discount retail chain with more than $475 million in sales. The company closed the Duckwall division in 2011 to strategically focus on growing its ALCO division — now operating more than 210 stores in 23 states. In all of ALCO’s existence, the company has never sacrificed the Midwestern values that helped to launch, and grow, ALCO Stores.
