Overview
In 1972, the ICMA Retirement Corporation (ICMA-RC) was created by the public sector for the public sector. Established by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) with the assistance of a Ford Foundation grant, ICMA-RC provided a portable retirement plan, enabling accumulated retirement assets to be transferred between employers.

In just over three decades, ICMA-RC has grown dramatically. Today ICMA-RC manages over $23 billion in assets for over 6,700 plan sponsors and over 650,000 public employees. We remain committed to exclusively serving the public sector by offering the best available retirement products and services including the Vantagepoint Funds and a full range of other investment options.

Our responsibility to the public sector community is as integral to the organization as are our investment products and retirement programs. We are vocal advocates for the interests of the public sector on Capitol Hill and in the community at large. The Vantagepoint Public Employee Memorial Scholarship, for example, has awarded more than $340,000 to children and/or spouses of public employees who died in the line of duty. We are also a founding corporate sponsor of the International Hispanic Network and support the local community with food and clothing drives and tutoring programs.

ICMA-RC has partnered with the National Fraternal Order of Police (NFOP) to create the NFOP Retirement Health Savings Plan and the Blue Line 457 Plan for NFOP members. NFOP chose ICMA-RC because it is a leader in providing retirement and retirement health savings plans to public safety organizations, and its long-standing commitment to public safety professionals.

ICMA-RC is the primary sponsor of the Vantagepoint Public Employee Memorial Scholarship Fund, a Section 501(c)(3) public charity which honors the sacrifice of public sector employees who gave so much to their communities and who paid the ultimate price for their service. ICMA-RC is also a sponsor of the Western States Police & Fire Games, and a founding corporate sponsor of the International Hispanic Network.

A Tax Benefit for Your Future

As a public employee, you have a unique opportunity to supplement your retirement income. If your employer provides a 401 or 457 retirement plan, you can invest through automatic payroll deductions. In a Section 457 deferred compensation plan and in many 401 defined contribution plans, you may save pre-tax dollars. Pre-tax contributions are funds contributed before federal, and in most cases state and local, income taxes are withheld. Your contributions and your earnings on them are not taxed while you let them grow since they are retirement savings.
