Overview
Sacramento Center for Hematology and Medical Oncology, Inc.
is a professional medical corporation providing hematology and oncology care in the greater Sacramento, California area. The practice was formed in 1991 by the merger of two existing practices and is currently one of the largest and most respected hematology-oncology groups in Northern California. The practice currently consists of eight physicians and one nurse practitioner. Collectively, our physicians have decades of experience in the treatment of cancer and blood diseases and are widely recognized throughout the greater Sacramento area as experts in their field. All of the physicians are board certified both in internal medicine and oncology, and most are also board certified in hematology.
In 2006, Sacramento Center for Hematology and Medical Oncology joined the US Oncology network, the nation's leading healthcare cancer treatment and research network. Through this affiliation, the practice has been able to access the network's extensive resources in management support, pharmaceutical services, and clinical research, as well as the clinical benefits of interacting with more than 1,000 other US Oncology affiliated physicians. This affiliation allows us to share best practices and to improve the care delivered to our patients.
Environment
With the explosive growth of the Internet over the past few years, the number of sites offering health-related material has been increasing dramatically. Consumers searching the Internet for information about cancer prevention, diagnosis, or treatment face a bewildering number of choices today. These include sites sponsored by government or academic institutions, sites from nonprofit organizations like the American Cancer Society or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, pharmaceutical or industry sponsored sites, and sites designed and maintained by private individuals. Consumers have appropriately expressed concern about the reliability of cancer information found on the Internet. Most people are sophisticated enough to realize that just because something is found on the Internet, that does not mean it is necessarily applicable to an individual’s own health situation. It may not even be the slightest bit factual. It can be quite a challenge to evaluate so many of the cancer-related Web sites available today, particularly when most are slick and full of eye-catching graphics and links. When evaluating health-related content on Web sites,

The financial aspect of dealing with cancer can be complex and overwhelming. Our financial counselors are here to help answer your questions about the cost of treatment and, on your behalf, handle insurance inquiries, verifications and claims processing. For patients whose insurance coverage is inadequate or for those patients who do not have insurance, financial counselors can help identify assistance programs that may offer help in meeting financial obligations. Additionally, we can connect you to services and resources in your community, such as disability, supplemental Medi-Cal programs and medication assistance programs.

For patients who may reach a point in their illness where further attempts at active therapy are either not possible or not advisable, we offer palliative care to maximize quality of life through pain control and aggressive symptom management. Our physicians and nurses have extensive experience in this area. Hospice care is an important part of palliative care and, when appropriate, is carefully coordinated by a patient's physicians, nurses, hospice nurses, medical directors, social workers, clergy (if desired) and volunteers. Hospice focuses on maintaining the comfort and quality of life for patients up to the time of death and providing support for the family during and after a patient's illness. Patients in the greater Sacramento area have access to a number of hospice programs, depending on where they live, and our staff is very comfortable in working with the hospice team members to achieve these goals.
