Our Beginnings
The Times Recorder has served Zanesville and Southeastern Ohio since 1852, when Jacob Glessner and John B. Roberts began publishing the Zanesville City Times, an independent newspaper. The Times Recorder was created from a merger of the Zanesville Daily Times, published by Jesse Atwell; the Adamsville Recorder, published by Edward Spencer; and the Weekly Visitor, published by Rev. W. M. Acton. The fi rst issue was published in January 1885. The Times Recorder was purchased by a stock company in 1886. That same year, William Littick, a nephew of Spencer, began working for the Times Recorder as a $5-per-week mail clerk. In 1903, Littick purchased control of the Times Recorder and became general manager. The Littick family controlled the newspaper until it was sold to Thomson Newspapers in 1970. Thomson sold it to Gannett in August 2000.
