The Times Recorder has served Zanesville and Southeastern Ohio since 1852, when Jacob Glessner and John B. Roberts began publishing the Zanesville City Times, an independent newspaper. The Times Recorder was created from a merger of the Zanesville Daily Times, published by Jesse Atwell; the Adamsville Recorder, published by Edward Spencer; and the Weekly Visitor, published by Rev. W. M. Acton. The first issue was published in January 1885. The Times Recorder was purchased by a stock company in 1886. That same year, William Littick, a nephew of Spencer, began working for the Times Recorder as a $5-per-week mail clerk. In 1903, Littick purchased control of the Times Recorder and became general manager. The Littick family controlled the newspaper until it was sold to Thomson Newspapers in 1970. Thomson sold it to Gannett in August 2000.
Founded in 1797, Zanesville is located in Muskingum County where the Licking River flows into the Muskingum River. The famous Y-Bridge crosses the confluence of these two major waterways. "Ripley's Believe It or Not" proclaimed it "the only bridge in the world in which you can cross and still be on the same side of the river." Zanesville was the state capitol from 1810-1812. Some of Zanesville's most well-known citizens are author Zane Grey and former astronaut and U.S. Sen. John Glenn.
Once nicknamed Clay City, Zanesville boasts unique pottery tours and pottery outlets. There is an annual Pottery Week each July. For antique collectors, there are 30 antique stores. Adventure-lovers can visit the Wilds, which features more than 9,000 acres of rolling grassland. Animals from Asia, Africa and North America greet visitors who pass through aboard the Wilds' shuttles.
Zanesville's residents are proud of their rich heritage, historic districts, museums and many other varied attractions. Every day an estimated 30,000 cars roll through the heart of Zanesville on busy Interstate 70. Zanesville, located 55 miles east of Columbus, is a hub for many distribution centers.
