The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians
are of the Native American tribe known as "Serrano," a name given to us by the Spaniards which means "mountaineer." Long before the Spaniards and other European settlers arrived here, our ancestors roamed a territory that spanned the San Bernardino Mountains and valley, and adjoining desert lands. In our native language, we call ourselves "Yuhaviatam," or "people of the pines." From the day the Creator placed us on Mother Earth, we have lived here in harmony with all living things and the spirit world - our connection to the Great Mystery

Following years of subjugation to Spanish settlers and changes to California's physical and political landscape, the San Manuel Reservation was established in 1891. By this time, only a few hundred Serrano people remained. We were recognized as a sovereign nation, with the right to make and be governed by our own laws. The reservation is named after Santos Manuel, a great tribal leader and is located in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, just north of the city of Highland. It is 740 acres of mostly mountainous land.

<>Because much of the reservation land is not suitable for farming, our people struggled to survive and prosper. For many years, people left the reservation in search of a better life. Those who stayed endured poverty and hardship. Until the mid-20th century, many reservation homes were made of adobe, with no electricity, indoor plumbing, or running water. Unemployment rates reached as high as 75%. We needed to find new ways to support ourselves and become self-sufficient.

In the mid-1980s, we invested in a high-stakes bingo operation, and San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino was born. The gaming facility expanded in 1994 to include a cardroom and additional space for video machines. San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino now employs over 1,500 people, most of them non-Indian, and is one of the largest employers in the Inland Empire area. With our economic outlook secure, we have become a self-sufficient partner to our community. The San Manuel tribe is active in donating funds for a variety of projects in neighboring areas. Nearby cities and towns receive support from San Manuel for cultural, social, and other projects to benefit the common good.
