An Industry Leader
Ready Pac is a market leader in the supply of fresh-cut produce to retail grocery chains, mass-merchandisers and foodservice organizations throughout North America. Every day, millions of families in homes across the U.S. and Canada rely on Ready Pac products to enhance their meals while saving them time. In fact, five million pounds of fresh-cut salad mixes and other produce are packaged and shipped every week by Ready Pac.
In 1969, Dennis Gertmenian founded Ready Pac, locating its first facility in Pasadena, California. The idea for Ready Pac arose in a corner of Dennis' father's produce warehouse. While his father was away on vacation, Dennis received an urgent request from his father's largest account to provide ready-to-eat salads instead of whole produce. Determined not to lose the business, Dennis quickly bought cutting boards, French knives, and a bathtub in which he could carefully wash the produce. Three days later, he delivered exactly what the customer wanted. And Ready Pac was born.
Soon, the bathtub disappeared and modern equipment was installed. Ready Pac expanded from foodservice to make its retail debut in 1978, experiencing tremendous growth. In 1990, Ready Pac partnered with leaders in European fresh-cut produce processing and packaging technology, which led to the introduction of its popular European-Style salad blends, combining the quality of restaurant salads with the convenience of ready-to-serve. Representing the pinnacle of product quality and packaging appeal, Ready Pac's European-Style salad blends helped pave the way for a whole new array of upscale salad varieties that have now become the largest segment of packaged salads in the U.S.
A Tradition of Innovation and Growth
Innovation is a hallmark of the Ready Pac tradition. From the patented process for Aqua Pac® vegetables developed in the late '70's, to nutritious, delicious Microwave Spinach first introduced in the 1990's, unique products, packaging and processes have kept Ready Pac in the forefront of the industry and led to tremendous growth.
In 1996, Ready Pac doubled the size of its facility in Florence, New Jersey and brought its Salinas, California and Yuma, Arizona processing operations under one roof at its new Irwindale, California headquarters facility. Then, with one centralized west coast operation, the Irwindale facility underwent a multimillion-dollar expansion to further increase production efficiencies.
Celebrating the turn of the century in 2000, Ready Pac entered into three strategic partnerships to accommodate future growth, teaming with OBIM Fresh-Cut Fruit or Fort Worth Texas, Missa Bay of Swedesboro, New Jersey, and Veg Pro of Florida and Canada. That same year Ready Pac deepened its commitment to the fresh-cut fruit segment with the development of a dedicated fruit processing facility within its Irwindale operation. With a rapidly growing customer base in the Midwest and high demand for fresh-cut fruit, Ready Pac opened a third production facility in Franklin Park, Illinois in 2003. Today Ready Pac is the number one brand of fresh-cut fruit in the USA.
Larry Kern Joins Ready Pac
Much of Ready Pac's growth is attributed to Dennis Gertmenian's keen ability to initiate key partnerships and strategic acquisitions. Dennis brought Larry Kern on board in March 2004 as President and CEO to handle day-to-day leadership, though Dennis retains his position as Chairman of the Board and will concentrate on corporate strategy. A well-respected industry veteran, Larry served as President and COO of Dole Food Company. Under his proven direction, Ready Pac plans to establish an even stronger national position in the fast-growing arena of convenient fresh foods.
Every year, Ready Pac donates 10 percent of its profits back to the community. It also sponsors Ready Pac Kids to Camp, Inc., a non-profit organization that raises money through private donations and a company matching fund to send underprivileged children to summer camp each year.
Ready Pac and Salad Time Complete Merger
In August 2004, Ready Pac completed its agreement to combine Tanimura & Antle's Salad Time value-added business with Ready Pac, which integrates six Salad Time facilities into Ready Pac's production and distribution operation, thus creating a stronger, broader base from which to supply fresh-cut products across North America.
Specifically, Ready Pac will leverage its expanded network of regional production facilities across both retail and foodservice channels in its key fresh-cut salad, fruit and vegetable as well as single-serve protein salad product lines.
Today, Ready Pac employs more than 4,000 associates and maintains its commitment to quality, innovation and freshness. Ready Pac has been the recipient of the American Culinary Institute's Best Taste Award for fresh-cut salads, fruit, and vegetables every year since 1999.
