Did you know NCL America (NCLA) is a division of Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)? Did you also know, NCLA produced the first U.S. flagged ship in over 50 years that serves only the Hawaiian islands? WHAT IS "FREESTYLE CRUISING"?
On NCL, guests are free to follow their whim—not a bunch of strict schedules and rules. For instance, on our ships there are no set dining times. Instead, our guests choose between any of our 10-15 restaurants onboard. With no set schedule – and a relaxed dress code - they get to do what they want when they want. So they’re free to dine when they want, wear what they want, nap when they want. They’re free to do whatever. That’s freestyle cruising.

Our ship is 15 stories high, features dozens of restaurants and cafés and caters to over 2000 guests 24 hours a day. From pools to night clubs to day spas each one is a resort on the high seas. The experience you’ll get working on a ship is unique. You share your room with 2, maybe 3, others. You are served four free meals a day. And you have access to a crew gym, computers (Internet access is not paid for) and lounge. You’ll also get specialized training. It’s there you’ll learn CPR, water safety, crowd control and get certified as a Merchant Mariner from the Coast Guard. Once you are aboard, you will simply go through our not-too-rigorous pre-employment checklist, complete your training, and get your Merchant Mariners Document (MMD) from the Coast Guard. (Your mom will be very impressed!)

a. Original Government-issued ID card (i.e., drivers license, state ID, military ID. The name on the ID card must be EXACTLY the same as the name on your Social Security Card. If you do not have one, GO GET IT NOW! PLUS,
b. Original Social Security Card, PLUS,
c. One of the following:
* If U.S. Citizen: Original Birth Certificate or Passport
* If Permanent Resident: Green Card
* If Naturalized Citizen: Original Certificate of Naturalization
Driving Abstract: Go to your local DMV or search for it online and print it out. (There may be a fee to obtain this document.)
Court/Criminal Abstract: Go to your local police station to get any documents that state dispositions of any charges, and receipts of paid traffic tickets (they may still appear pending on the background check if they were paid too recent). (There may be a fee to obtain this document as well.)

Dating is allowed between crewmembers. Dating guests, however, is never allowed.

There’s no drinking on duty and absolutely no drug use at any time.

Every applicant must provide MMD (Merchant Mariners Document) materials:

Government issued ID card
Social Security Card
One of these: Birth Certificate/Passport/
Green Card or Naturalization form
All crewmembers are required to wear uniforms while on duty.

IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT FOR ALL APPLICANTS:

You must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and qualify for a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document. In order to work on a U.S. flagged cruise ship, U.S. law requires that a Merchant Mariners Document (MMD or Z card), be issued to the individual by the U.S. Coast Guard. If you are given a contingent job offer by NCL America and you do not have a MMD card, you will need to apply for a MMD card either by designating NCL America as your agent to apply for you or applying for it yourself.

A person applying for a MMD card must disclose to the Coast Guard information concerning such matters as prior drug use, criminal convictions, and revocation of driver’s license. Under the Coast Guard regulations “convictions” specifically include deferred acceptance of guilty (DAGS) pleas, no contest pleas, and convictions where restitution, a fine or community service is the penalty imposed for the conviction.

The following are specific conduct related questions that will be required to be answered as part of the MMD Application.
