Our History
In 1933, during the Great Depression, seven civilian Navy personnel formed a self-help club. Each pledged $10—two weeks’ wages—into a savings pool so that funds would be available for emergency loans.

Savings clubs, like this one, became credit unions. As a credit union, Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU) has members, not customers. We are proud to serve the men and women of the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, the civilian employees of the Department of Defense and their families. We have no stockholders—no outside third parties to exert influence, we operate under democratic control.

Each member has one vote in annual elections regardless of the amount of money they have deposited in the credit union. Since we are not for profit, our surplus funds, after ensuring reserves, are distributed to members as dividends, reduced interest on loans, and improved services.
