HISTORY OF THE ENQUIRER:
The Enquirer’s first owners were John and Charles Brough who published the first edition on Saturday afternoon, April 10, 1841. In 1843, The Enquirer ceased its afternoon publication and began publishing a morning edition. In 1848, it became the fifth newspaper in the country to publish a Sunday edition. The Sunday Enquirer is America’s oldest Sunday newspaper. In 1930, The Enquirer became Cincinnati’s only major morning newspaper. In 1978, Combined Communications Corporation agreed in principle to exchange stock and merge with the Gannett Company, the largest newspaper group in America. On April 22, 1979, the printers, press operators, camera plate makers and mailers move to a new printing plant at Liberty Street and Western Avenue. On April 10, 1991, as The Enquirer celebrated its 150th anniversary, Jim Borgman won a Pulitzer Prize and was recognized as being the most talented and insightful cartoonist in America. On July 5, 1992, The Enquirer moved to its current location at 312 Elm Street.

Through its Captivate subsidiary, the broadcasting group delivers news and advertising to a highly desirable audience demographic through its video screens in office tower and select hotel elevators.
Gannett’s total Online U.S. Internet Audience in January 2007 was nearly 23.2 million unique visitors, reaching about 14.8% of the Internet audience, as measured by Nielsen//NetRatings.
OTHER VENTURES: Complementing its publishing and broadcasting businesses, the company has made strategic investments in online advertising. HISTORY AND FINANCIAL: Gannett was founded by Frank E. Gannett and associates in 1906 and incorporated in 1923. The company went public in 1967. It reincorporated in Delaware in 1972.
