Cummins MerCruiser Diesel Announces New Electronic Sterndrive Package QSB5.9 ES 230
Cummins MerCruiser Diesel is proud to introduce the QSB5.9 ES 230. This fully electronic engine and revolutionary sterndrive package combining the new QSB5.9 inboard engine with a driveshaft to the proven MerCruiser Bravo II-X drive is creating waves throughout the marine industry worldwide.
With its roots going back to the proven 6BTA5.9, the in-line six cylinder QSB5.9 ES 230 provides a Quantum Leap in the marine industry by incorporating the latest high tech diesel engine technology. This new high output rating produces 230 metric horsepower (169 kW) rated at 3000 RPM with displacement of 5.9 litres (359 cubic inches). Central to the engine’s new design is the high-pressure common rail fuel system, which improves economy, provides better power-to-weight ratio, makes for cleaner starting, virtually eliminates smoke and odor, lowers emissions levels and reduces noise. The base engine uses the same components as found in the 2005 Dodge Ram Pick-up Truck powered by the Cummins Turbo Diesel. The engine includes a new cylinder head with four valves per cylinder, which allows the engine to breathe easier for increased acceleration and torque.
This package utilizes the renowned MerCruiser Bravo II-X drive. With a propeller diameter of up to 20”, this drive is ideally suited for getting large boats on plane quickly and providing boat speeds of up to 40-45 knots. The Bravo II-X’s outstanding durability is due to it’s single propeller design, heavy duty components and state of the art gear technology. Numerous recent enhancements, such as a ribbed top cover, have further improved the reliability and durability to unprecedented levels. A new line of stainless steel propellers have been developed to optimize the performance on diesel applications. The drive is offered in a jackshaft configuration to allow the engine to be utilized in a center console or stern mounted configuration.
All new Quantum Series engines, including the QSB5.9 ES 230, will use the SmartCraft multiplexing control and communications system. Transfer of information between the engine and vessel sensors to the helm is accomplished over a datalink. This significantly reduces the amount of wiring in the engine room and at the helm. The decrease in wiring promotes ease of installation and increases the reliability of the electrical system by reducing the number of terminals and wires that can corrode. The SmartCraft system incorporates inputs from the engine, along with many other boat systems, such as fuel tank levels, GPS, steering, water depth and temperature. SmartCraft constantly monitors engine performance, providing instant diagnostics and operations data at the helm.
Customers can view information at the helm with CMD’s new Diesel View digital display or from a full set of system link gauges – analog gauges that are digitally driven. Both instrumentation options will be available.
New EPA emissions regulations (US) for diesel engines with recreational applications will take effect in January 2006. Their implementation is being preceded by the earlier introduction of regulations for commercial engines, which occurred in January 2004.
New technology being used for the development of the CMD Quantum Series is resulting in significantly cleaner running engines and the entire series, including the QSB5.9 ES 230, will meet these new stringent EPA Tier 2 emissions regulations. CMD’s QSM11 was the first engine to meet the new emissions regulations. Quantum engines also comply with the exhaust emission requirements as set forth by the future Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) affecting the European Union.
